Is There A Guide to Reinstalling OS+FSX to SSDs?

Featured Replies

Is there a comprehensive guide to re-installing the Windows 7 OS, as well as FSX Gold, onto an SSD? And can ORBX sceneries and other drive-space gobbling sceneries be placed on a conventional IDE SATA drive?

Thanks for any tips/links/pointers

Rick Almeida

Hi Rick,

Here's one excellent link for installing FSX - http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx

I heard that there is a method/procedure form moving Orbx sceneries to another HDD on the Orbx Forum.  So far I have not tried to do this and I own all of their massive sceneries.  I own an SSD and have Windows 7 and FSX installed on it.  Most of my addon sceneries (except Orbx) are located on another HDD.  Sceneries, like MegaSceneries, do not have to be reinstalled and can stay on a mechanical HDD.  You'll just have to link them in the Scenery Library or using the SceneryConfigEditor utility.  All of my FSDT sceneries are on another HDD and those have to be reinstalled.   I think you have to deactivate the FSDT sceneries before reinstalling them on another computer system or HDD.  That way you are telling their security you have uninstalled the scenery and putting it on another HDD or system.  I did it anyway and had no problems reinstalling it on my new system.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Jim

I'm indebted to you once more. Yes, I had read in this month's PC Pilot a similar question and more specifically related to the ORBX files, which like you I have, and PCP did not quite fully address the question posed.

I originally bought the Samsung 840 PRO 256Gb here and then on my recent visit to the USA, picked up another one at Fry's in Vegas, so was looking to completely re-vamp my system including a SB or Haswell based rebuild from scratch.and run it off those 2 SSDs and keep the 500Gb for storage of sceneries.

Hi Rick,

A lot of people travel to Vegas for other reasons  but glad you found what you needed at Fry's.  Don't know if you are aware of it but NickN has an excellent Haswell building guide - http://www.simforums.com/forums/haswell-48ghz-on-air-building-a-haswell-system_topic46180.html.  Have fun building a new system.  I just went through it and glad I upgraded.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Jim

Thanks for that post. Yes, I was amazed at what I found at Fry's and the Guitar Center on LV Blvd. Been after a Takamine for a long time and managed to get one there too.

Kind regards

Hi Jim

Can I kindly pick your brains?

As you may or may not be aware, I've been having a major issue with a Samsung 840 PRO SSD which is now awaiting an RMA tomorrow. But my current existing Samsung SpinPoint 500Gb SATA hard drive or Firefox v 21 is behaving oddly. I get an error code BCC 124. If I'm not connected to the Web vis Firefox, the system is stable. After about 5-10 minutes of using Firefox, I get a system lock-up followed by a CTD and re-boot. I can post the XML if you want but for now, will just attach the EventVwr screengrab.

Hope you can help.

Thanks

Rick Almeida
