I went with the SABERTOOTH Z87 for my Haswell build.

Hi Dave

I tend to go to ASUS as there's that o/c guide on the Flight1 forum but I understand that the Sabertooth Z87 doesn't support DDR3 2400 MhZ, am I right ?

Asus is overrated. Tons of other equally good boards out there, Gigabyte, ASRock, MSI.

No, You are wrong! The Sabertooth does support DDR3 2400MHZ and higher.

I understand that it is not listed in the manual and I asked the same question. I believe it has something to do with Asus marketing strategies that it is not listed but regardless it is supported. I have had no problems with it yet and don't expect to.

I haven't done any overclocking yet but I expect that to go well. I cannot compare it to other boards because it is the only Z87 board I have. This board is almost completely incased in its own armor and the components and described as military grade. My rig is going to end up in a sub-zero environment with potential large differences between day time and night time temps so the durability of this board was a big selling factor for me. My last board was a gigabyte and I was very happy with that too. Got my i7 920 to 4.85Ghz on that one.

I still have my first build with a Core Duo X6800 AI overclocked by 20% on an ASUS Striker Extreme which runs problem free for a few hours everyday for last 7 or 8 years.

Thanks for the clarification , appreciated ! When you see this (for the Maximus Hero), does that mean that 1600/1300 is the default and that you get to o/c your memory to reach a higher frequency ?

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 3000(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666(O.C.)/2600(O.C.)/2500(O.C.)/2400(O.C.)/2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1800(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

Good luck for your sub zero environment BTW (hope it's C° not F°  ) !

Wish it was F°!

Not sure exactly. Once you install the memory you buy and boot the memory will most like be running at 1600mhz even it the memory is rated to 2400mhz! You must activate XMP in the bios and then the memory will run at its rated speed and timing. You should test the memory at this time. One module at a time with "Memtest"

Nick Needham has composed two relivent thread on SIMFORUMS. The one I posted above and The other one is the FSX Bible as its called:http://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211.html

Its not everyone's cup off tea but it is working for me. My build is virtually identical to Nick's but guide should be good for any appropriate combination of hardware. It is not overly technical but it will take a time investment to study both guides. Well worth the effort considering the what you will be spending.

I am at the point where I am installing non FSX software to my system. This is a defined step in the guide. It comes before the optimization of windows and before the optimization of FSX. I am about 2 months into this project so patients is required to follow these guides and Nick is very clear that you might as well not bother unless you are going to follow the guide exactly.

However on my un-overclocked, un-optimized build, un-optimized FSX install (for example hyperthreading is not yet disabled) if I set the FPS to unlimited under the display tab I am getting on average 80fps in the VC of the new A2A C172 flying circuits around Orbx KHQM in moderate REX weather. Its the best I have ever seen FSX by far. Even if I did nothing else to this system I would be happy with as it stands now!

Again thanks, your inputs are very much appreciated.

I did read NickC's threads a couple of times already and I generally find more stuff on installing Asus boards than others brands anyway. But that memory issue was bugging me. Still some homework to  do,I guess .
