Re-Installing Everything - FSX

Featured Replies

I am going to renew the flight simulation desktop PC Rig.

I have started searching for old notes, forums tips, etc.

I have not re-installed everything before, except maybe FSX once about 3 years ago; so, I would appreciate tips to make this less painful than what I expect.

I plan to gather notes / links about what  I learn in the process, and will post here when I get done.

New Rig:

  • Intel Core i7-4770 / 16GB RAM
  • OS Win7-64 Pro
  • HDD 2TB 7200 rpm
  • GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX650 2GB GDDR5

The following will come from old Rig and will become part of new rig

  • 2 X Samsung Syncmaster 2494 flat screens
  • SSD Samsung 840 Pro 500GB => Will become drive C:\ in new rig

The following will stay, hopefully as-is now:

  • Home network
  • Second PC: Laptop Lenovo T410 with Win7-64 / 8 GB RAM / SSD 460GB
  • here I run Aivlasoft EFB, WideFS, Active Sky 2012, External IvAp for IVAO, Teamspeak 2 for IVAO

I need to install fresh the following in the new rig:

Apps:

  • SSD Samsung 840 Pro 500GB as drive C:\ primary bootable disk. I need to make an AHCI SATA device in the BIOS in order to make it work fast..
  • FSX
  • FSX Deluxe Edition SDK
  • FSX Acceleration Expansion Pack  SDK (get SimConnect working in 2 PCs networked)
  • FSUIPC 4.9
  • WideFS
  • FSCommander 9.2
  • Aivlasoft EFB Data Provider
  • Navigraph Charts 4

Scenaries:

  • FSGenesis World Terrain Mesh (All files)
  • VIRTUALCOL Extreme Edition
  • JustFlight Atlanta,Charlotte, Cincinatti, Nassau, San Juan
  • Aerosoft Megascenery KDFW
  • Aerosoft Madeira
  • New SEQM
  • New SVMI

Aircraft Add Ons

  • LevelD 767
  • PMDG NGX 738
  • AccuSim A2A B17
  • Carenado CT206H
  • IRIS Pro A10A Thunderbolt
  • IRIS F15
  • Just Flight C130 and 727 Captain
  • ALROT MD83
  • GUZMAN 707

So, I have started to look for old install notes, and searching the forums for ideas.

I hope this does not take me several days.

First, I would recommend following the guidance for installing FSX/Acceleration at the following link - http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx.  Excellent guide.

Make sure you start up FSX and run it before installing Acceleration.  After installing Acceleration, run it at least once before installing any addons.  You are going to get great FPS with just FSX/Acceleration installed so would only add the highmemfix=1 in the Graphics section of your fsx.cfg and no tweaks.  Well, with your system, you can change the Texture_Max_Load setting to 2048 (this is HD) and your LOD_Radius to 6.5.  Your TML setting should be about 80.  Do not add any additional tweaks.

Since I have the Haswell chipset too, I have been following the guidance of NickN who bought almost the exact system as mine - http://www.simforums.com/forums/gtx-780-settings-discussion-haswell-revealed_topic46112_page1.html.  He has also issued a new FSX configuration guide that's accessible through this link too.

Make sure FSX is on the same SSD as your Windows.  You can place all of your addons (or most of them) on separate HDD's.  Makes loading faster, that's all.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks you very much for the tips. I am going to look into it.

I also found this document http://forum.avsim.net/files/go/aeae53ace5fab408bb2212e8e9a1d536/fsx-hardware-software-guide

So far, what most surprised me is how little one gains in performance with a processor upgrade verses overclocking the processor.

Best regards

Copy keyboard macros if you have a programmable keyboard.

Copy camera config files if you use Opus.

Copy data files for any add-ons you have that use them, ie FSCaptain, fsuipc config files, etc...

Copy panel.cfg files for any aircraft where  you have modificatations due to other add-ons..  ie.. FS2Crew, FSFlight Keeper, FSCaptain..etc..

Copy any modifications to fsx files.. such as texture replacement for Feelthere's glass reflection textures if you have made any...

I am sure there are more... but this is a start...

Thank you Jim

I will look into the data files. I don't use Opus and I don't think I have recorded macros
