August 30, 201312 yr Hi folks, yesterday evening I was trying to shoot down the ILS approach runway 23R in Duesseldorf (EDDL). Everything was set up and identified, when on intercept heading I was cleared for the approach and pressed the "APP"-button. Now here's when the "strange" things startet to happen: - on the FMA it said LOC / G/P - on the upper left corner of the PFD the ILS identifier changed to the frequency (109,3) - also did "ILS" on the PFD change to LOC/G/P I suppose this has something to do with the IAN capability of the NGX, which I'm not familiar with, because we don't have airplanes with that feature in our fleet. Though I know, that you have almost the same idication when selecting a Localizer/NDB/VOR approach in the FMC and press "APP" but I'm 120% sure that i selected the ILS. And for demonstration purposes I tried the same thing again this morning and included 2 screenshots. So let's say is there a way to tell the NGX: "Hey, it's cool what you're doing, but I want you to use the ILS signal." So here it is just before pressing "APP" http://abload.de/img/ian1cvuqp.jpg And here right after: http://abload.de/img/ian2l3uux.jpg Greetings, -Chris Jeuck
August 30, 201312 yr It does appear to be going into IAN mode, which it would do if you hadn't set up the ILS. My guess would be that it isn't receiving the ILS, but it appears that it is since it's identified.. That's odd. Try waiting until you're a bit closer before pressing APP (FS localizers only go to like 15-20nm from what I remember). Just use LOC to intercept the localizer, then press APP when it's captured. That should do it. As for disabling IAN, I don't think that's possible. Steve Caffey
August 30, 201312 yr Commercial Member Chris,Two thoughts: 1. ILS glideslopes in FSX have a fixed range of around 20DME. You're still 24 away when this is happening here. If it's not that: 2. Are you positive this runway actually has a full ILS in the FSX "world"? Usually when we see this kind of thing the runway is localizer only or something like that - if you look at the NPS status on the PFD it says "LOC / G/P, which means it's receiving the localizer radio signal, but is generating the glidepath via IAN. I would look carefully in the FSX scenery - fly it using the Cessna or something and see if you ever receive a true radio glideslope indication. August 30, 201312 yr Author Thanks Steven and Ryan I tried it again this time a little bit closer to the airport and it worked. Didn't know about that 20nm thing, I thought when the airplane identified everything i was good to go Thanks for clearing that up Greetings, -Chris Jeuck
September 1, 201312 yr Just one more thought on that: I use the FAC+G/P (IAN) option when ATC gives an ILS interception heading prior to receiving the LOC. This way overshooting the CL (and other intrusions) can be avoided. As soon as the NAV identifiers (morse code) can be heard, it is possible to change an IAN appr. to an ILS appr. just by pressing the APP button twice (deactivation and activation). Because of the meanwhile presence of the LOC+G/S signal, ILS mode is selected now automatically. Greetings, Claus Claus KUEPPER
