September 8, 201312 yr I'm hoping perhaps someone might be able to give me some advice and help to polish my flare and final touchdown. I am able to hold a stable approach by either PAPI or ILS G/S until at least 50' AFE (effectively the threshold). Additionally, I am using the A/T (based on Boeing protocol) to hold Vref + 5. The A/T does retard at 25' as it should and I am starting my flare between 20-30' (closer to 20' now). What I am finding is that I have a tendency to float and don't make touchdown until 2,500-3,000' past the threshold (just at the very limit of the TDZ) and around Vref - 5 (again, technically ok, but at the limit). This works ok at the airports I've been flying at recently with nice long runways, but eventually I'd like to start flying in to some "smaller" airports (it's all relative). So a few things I know: 1) practice makes perfect...working on it 2) per the manual (FCOM volume 2 I think it was) I should be 1-2 degrees nose up on approach and 4-5 degrees at the end of the flare (varies based on weight). It's a good guideline, but seeing as the flare is a visual maneuver, the FPV isn't the first place I'm looking at. 3) if I'm floating, some combination of initiating the flare later and pulling back less on the yoke is needed (here comes the practice) So with all of that said, anyone out there want to share some tips? I'm trying to make a balance of circuits to practice as well as real flights to figure out all the other segments. Eric Szczesniak
September 8, 201312 yr Yep, flare less. Just get that nose gear above the mains. Take longer to flare (so , flare less degrees, but also get the nose there over 2 or 3 seconds, really small movements on the elevator). If I touch the gear down before I feel like I'v finished flaring, it's probably about right less than 5 degrees and more than 2 up... should be about right. September 8, 201312 yr This may be bad technique, but I try to watch the VSI in my peripheral vision and smoothly bring it up to around -60 FPM in the flare, at least until I have a good feel for the airplane and then I don't need to watch the VSI. Barry Friedman
