Good Air Force base scenery?

Featured Replies

Hello World,Does anyone know of any decent air force scenery for FS9? I find flying jets out of KLAX a tad "unrealistic" :)Any place in the world and payware/freeware :)Thanks for your time,United757 :)

Look for Selfridge in Michigan. A search of "selfridge" in the AVSIM library will get you a few hits for the scenery.

I think the McChord AFB, Tacoma WA scenery for FS2004 is "good" and/or "decent", if I do say so myself :-smile12 Larry

Alphasim has quite a few Air Force and Navy installations. I have tried to get an answer on how good they are and either people dont know about the scenery or no one wanted to answer me.http://www.alphasim.co.uk/main.html

Gary Summons at UK2000 has modelled many UK military bases and they are the best around.Take a look athttp://www.uk2000scenery.com/main/index.htmand see what you think. They are payware but very reasonable in price.Hope this helpsTONY

As a first real venture into scenery design I have recently started on a series of ex USAFE fields in England. So far availableare Upper Heyford,Greenham Common,Woodbridge . All are available FREE at either AVSIM ,Flightsim or direct from my FS addon website athttp://flitetime.g4otu.com/They all come with Landclass files and AFCADs ( by David Hanstater).Bentwaters is also available as a Beta only from my Website.Next in the list will be Alconbury then Wetherfield and possibly Burtonwood.Dave

Randolph AFB in Texas by James Shaddox is the best I have come across, the texures are photoreal and include night lighting. It is a big download but well worth it. There is a set of screenshots with Alpha Sierra's T-37 posted over at flightsim's screenshot forum I did a few weeks ago. Wish there were more like this one. I have tried some of the others listed in this thread and often they are overloaded with so many ground aircraft that your framerates go way down, nice to look at but impossible to fly out of or into.Zane

"and often they are overloaded with so many ground aircraft that your framerates go way down,"You will find if you try my Upper Heyford scenery the following advice............."There are 3 levels of FS scenery complexity setting built in .If you set Scenery Complexity to "Sparse" you will get the basic airfield , hangars etc."Normal " will bring in additional objects such as fences, some huts and small buildings." Very Dense" will activate static aircraft, vehicles and some non- essential buildings etc.Depending on the capabilities of your system - choose the setting which gives you the best results."I made this scenery at the request of 2 ex Upper Heyford flyers - one of whom runs it in FS2002 on a 1.2GHZ CPU and an aged video card quite successfully. There is IMHO no reason why any addon scenery can not be compiled with several complexity level settings.Dave

Zane, Ah, yes, Randolph, now did I spend some time there in my youth! That's where the AF taught me to fly 'their' way! And it's great scenery also and I have it. Good stuff. I think Monica mentioned the last time I saw a post from her on the forum that she was working on Griffiss in Rome NY, the former 'Buff' base which is now closed. Wonder how she's doing on that one?Best to all,Clay

Hello Dave,I haven't tried these airport sceneries as I don't fly much in England... maybe someday :). Just wanted to thank you for taking this into consideration when you made your scenery. I am using a 2.0GHZ Athlon and Ti4200 128MB card and am able to get reasonably smooth visuals in all areas, the other Washington state and Texas airbases that I tried were so complex that they pulled down frame rates enough to make them unusable for my tastes. I didn't try lowering my scenery complexity for them because in all honesty I wouldn't want to have to use a lower setting just for two or three airports, if that were the option I'd rather delete them which is what I did. If more scenery addons were made with varying levels like you have done it would be easier to find a happy medium.Best wishes,Zane

> Does anyone know of any decent air force scenery for FS9? At flightsim.com you can do a search for "military" under the _scenery_ heading and find about 24 of them. A search for AFB will bring up 18 but a few are duplicates, with a number of new ones. There may be some others, on other sites which may not be here. In addition, you can fly out of Naval Air Stations all over CA. El Toro Marine Base and Lighter than Air in Tustin... Miramar in SD, or Marsh in Riverside, and of courses Edwards, which has the longest, widest runway you wil ever need, with a long overrun beyond it. Much or all of the testing of new military aircraft is done here. The Shuttle lands here, we've been out to see it when a landing is announced, thousands watch. In addition is Daggert in Barstow, used by Civilian, but still used by the Marine Logistical Base there. There are dozens of bases in CA, China Lake, a Navy experimental base, and probably 50-100 which used to be Military Bases. Since WWII they have been turned over to local towns or cities. But, the Hangers are still the huge ones used by the Military. You might choose EL Toro, or Edwards for the scenery. Then use TTools to set up some AI flights to so you have other traffic around. Actually there is not a lot of difference between LAX, and EDW except the traffic. Both have large buildings, but at EDW a scenery package has the Shuttle sitting on the Tarmac. :-spacecraft Here is a "Short List" of some others, 2EDW 23CA 6CA6 8Q3 9L2 A28A30 BYS CA53 CA62 L64 L69 L77 KAHC KBAB KDAG KEDW KHHR KIYK KLVKKMCC KMHR KMMH KMCE KMYF KNFG KNID KNJK KNKX KNLC KNRS KNSI KNTDKNTK KNUC KNUQ KNXP KNZJ KNZY KPOC KPMD KRIV KSBD KSLI KSUU KVBGKVCV NGZ NRC

You referenced the Washington scenery and framerates, I assume that's McChord. Did the McChord scenery you tried have any static planes? If not, it was mine. On my 2.53 w/ATI 9600, I can see a frame drop if I have the counter on, but I don't really notice it in normal flight. On my brothers 800mhz system, it gets hit hard, but I just figured it was to be expected. I never got any feedback on the scenery, so I assumed it was running the same as on mine. I've been using FSDS for scenery, but I'm trying to get ready for FS2006 and learning Gmax. I'll use McChord as a starting point and see if there's a difference.Larry

Hello all,Many thanks for helping me out with my question.I look forward ti using the bases suggested, may I once again say a big thank you for your input it is most appreciated.best wishes,United757
