New FSX System and HDD Query

Featured Replies

Hi,

I shall be ordering the following system primarily for FSX;

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

Samsung SSD 840 Series 120GB Solid State Drive

Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache Hard Drive

Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Overclocked to 4.4GHz

Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)

Corsair 2013 Edition Gamer Series GS 600W '80 Plus Bronze Power Supply

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit

Corsair Carbide 500R Midi Tower Case - Black

Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclock ACX 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

I am looking to install the OS and FSX on the SSD for increased loading times etc however due to the smallish nature of the SSD am I correct in thinking I can install aircraft/scenery to the HDD and FSX would still be able to locate the necessary files etc?

I'm probably going to be acquiring the PMDG 777 and 737 and would therefore place these on the SSD as I'm sure the access speed would benefit these particular aircraft.

Many thanks for your comments/suggestions.

hello

you will have a great system hopefully . i would also like to add that installing fsx on a ssd wont make a big difference ( correct me if im wrong fsx guru's ) . what i personally do is install win 7 on the ssd only . and install fsx on a hard drive . and no you cant install planes/scenery on a hard drive and fsx on the other . and by the way why do you want to install stuff on your ssd when you have a 2tb hard drive haha  :P

Regards

Thanks for your response. I wanted to benefit from the increased speed of the SSD, if like you say the difference won't be big the overall speed of the computer will be much faster than I am currently used to.

hello

it seems that you didn't understand me ( i think :P  ) . what i meant was its very good to install win7 on your ssd . but for all the other applications youll be better off using the hdd but if overall speed REALLY matters to you upgrade your ssd to a 256 gb version . and downgrade your hdd because 2 tb is a lot if youre going to store most of your things on the ssd . ( unless youll be using other programs that will need 2 tb )

just my 2 cents  ^_^

Ah ok, Yes I may well do that then, I'd prefer a large hdd as I do some photography too. Thanks for your input

I just built my sys a few months back and opted for OS & FSX on one fast SSD, however it's a 500Gb Samsung 840.   There is virtually constant READ activity off the FSX drive, so I would rethink installing FSX on a separate HDD.  I use other HDDs in the system for data, and yet another Win7 OS on a separate SATA II HDD for all non-FSX uses.  This way my OS + FSX SSD can remain ultra lean & clean--I have virtually no other applications beyond FSX and its add ons.  No need even for antivirus or other bloatware since I don't even surf the web off of the SSD boot.  This also keeps repeat writes to the SSD almost nonexistent, which helps SSDs.  I have my token 1Gb swap file on the data HDD, though it's never written to anyway from FSX running.

Thanks, I may well look into getting an additional SSD just for FSX then. I'm expecting big performance gains from this system so it will be interesting to see how FSX is handled!
