I have never used vatsim before. I got a vatsim id and password. I am using fsinn (also downloaded fscopilot). I follow the online tutorials I can find and believe I set all the appropriate settings. I also enter the proper server address. I can see people online with vatspy, but the fsinn continues to show me as not being connected to vatsim in fsx. I have been unable to find anything indicating why I can not connect. 

Also tried squawkbox and while it claims I am connected I only see the words text only and I can not hear or see anything else. I searched online and followed the direction to open some ports to no avail. I've spent the last five hours tonight trying to get vatsim to work and I'm running out of ideas.

When you open the FSINN MCP (Main Control Panel) are you clicking in the VATSIM box in the left column?  The box should turn green and you will hear a double chime.  You will also get a chat message about connecting to VATSIM servers.

I click it and it turns red. There is no chime.

Maybe wrong IP address then.  I'm not at home so I don't know which one I'm using.  I'll check in a few hours if you want.

 

As far as Squawk box goes, default unicom frequency on VATSIM is 122.80, and text only with Squawkbox.  You need to be in range of an online controller to listen (use VATSPY).  When you are in range, you will see their frequency.  When you tune it in, you will get a tone and enable text & voice both.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the software so now I have fsinn working I think. At least I can hear everyone. Haven't tried to talk yet. Working on a flight plan now.

Yea, I got it working. Its a lot harder than I thought it would be to fly with vatsim. Still not sure what to say all the time, but trying to learn!
