October 19, 201312 yr Author Upgrade worked fine for me (and no issues with FSX, which I run in DX10). I also took a chance. The install took forever (over an hour) and I did eventually get to the infamous black screen delay. I let it sit for about ten minutes with only the white arrow cursor and then the install continued and ended successfully. A number of incompatible programs were disabled, but nothing major. i read over all the online comments and they said just to be sure to disconnect all external devices except (obviously) the keyboard and mouse. And also, disable your anti-virus app. After all that, 8.1 doesn't seem that different. Did any FSX add-on not work properly for you? Everything seemed okay to me, but I didn't check every aircraft, etc..
