G2D.dll CTD - need help

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have been having this problem for almost this whole week and can not get rid of it. I've searched until the 10th page of Google, tried everything everyone has recommended on this issue and can still not fix it. I've tried already to reinstall my FSX, update my DirectX, update my graphics drivers, do a memory test (which came out with nothing), and I still can not get it to work. I am currently on the Microsoft Flight Simulator X version with Acceleration. I've even tried to get the corrupt file (g2d.dll) from a friend to replace it, and I still got nothing. I've tried to make my FSX rebuilt the cfg file, and no different results came up. I've also made FSX rebuild my scenery index's and I still have this problem.

Whenever I start up FSX, I can either get to select an aircraft and then the error message with (FSX has stopped responding) comes up, and it points back to the g2d.dll file. Sometimes I can select the aircraft, and I get to the point where I choose my route, save the FP and my flight starts loading. Between 36% and 39%, it crashes. Usually it's right as it gets to the 39%, the error comes up. When I click the "Stop program" button or whatever it's called, I also get another error message to do with the terrain.dll file.  Here's my error log:

This happened one night after I installed the Maddog MD80 airplane. However, I've removed EVERY TRACE of the Maddog and I still have the problem. I've went in to delete some more aircraft and it still happens. I have also reinstalled FSX and I still have the same problem.

I want to get this problem fixed as quick as I can to get back out and flying, so please help me if you know a bit about this issue.

G2D.dll - The g2d.dll is indicated as the faulting module. The dll handles plain text messages, like the frame rate counter and those other plain text messages you see periodically while running FSX and the plain text words in the FSX Menu, like the words Options, View, etc. There may be something corrupted in your dll.xml which loads menu items.

Best regards,

Jim

I would also move the uiautomationcore.dll to a temporary folder.  Did this dll fix your CTD's?  No.  In fact, it might be causing even more issues with fsx.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for your reply. I have just tried to move the uiautomationcore.dll file to a temporary folder out of my game, but I am still getting the same error message, this time at 36% of the flight loading phase.

So that is the clue to what is causing your crash.  Terrain loads to about 72% before starting to load other things.  So that's the likely problem.  You might have a terrain.dll corruption (fairly unlikely) but you should disable any scenery in the Scenery Library, restart FSX and see if that fixes the problem.  If so, it is an issue with one of your installed addons.  If you have a lot of scenery installed, I would enable 3-4 at a time until the problem reoccurs.

Best regards,

Jim

Hey Jim,

Just spent a few hours doing what you said. I can't exactly pick out the file with the problem, because some of the scenery files worked with really small international airports but the same file didn't work for some of the major US airports. However, I picked out the problem to be within these files:

0301 Base

0300 Base

0207 Base

0206 Base

0205 Base

0204 Base

0203 Base

0202 Base

0201 Base

0200 Base

If I disable all of it, then yes, I am able to get into the game at this very small airport I never heard of.. it started with an NZxx - I don't remember what the x's were.

Those are the scenery files listed in order throughout my Scenery Library to where the problem seems to be when loading the flight. Another key of the problem I've found today is that it doesn't only occur when I go to start my flight around the 36% area. Sometimes the problem pops up if I sit on the main screen of FSX too long or on the aircraft select screen too long.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Eric

You do not want to disable any of the default!  Not good!  Just any addon scenery.  Those 0301 Base, etc., are default scenery files.  If any of those are corrupt, then you need to either do a repair of FSX or do a complete reinstall.  Do you have your Internet Explorer running in the background when you load FSX?  That will sometimes make loading FSX extremely long and sometimes it won't start up at all as Internet Explorer is probably taking up most of your memory resources.  On my computer I can replicate this issue 100% of the time.

Also, did you make a default flight and save it or are you trying to load the default flight that came with FSX?  Sometimes these new saved flights used for the default startup get corrupted and fsx has a hard time finding all the scenery, gauges, aircraft, etc., to load the flight properly.

Best regards,

Jim

Hey Jim,

Oh! In that case, I don't have any addon scenery so I'm not exactly sure of the problem. My internet explorer is not running in the background. To load my flight in, I save a new flight plan file that FSX generates, I do not use one that I already have saved. I'm not exactly sure what is wrong with my game, as I have already tried to reinstall it, and from searching through all these forums, I can not find any other solution to the problem.

Thanks,

Eric

One of the easiest fixes for FSX woes is to delete the fsx.cfg, restart fsx and let the config rebuild.  I don't know whether you have tried tweaking your fsx.cfg, but, if you did, this can lead to problems too.  The dll.xml gets corrupted too and I fixed a CTD once by looking at my dll.xml and saw there were old entries of software I had uninstalled and there was one duplicate entry for PMDG.  I removed the entries for the old software and the duplicate and the problem went away.  There have been problems with Squawkbox and FSInn or FSCoPilot if they are not configured "exactly" as per the instructions of the developer.  You have your Microsoft Visuals 2005, 2008, and 2010 properly installed and they are up-to-date.  Simconnect is properly installed and loading properly.

For 99.9% of all FSX crashes, you have to run an investigation as there is no silver bullet that will fix each one.  It might be a high setting, a bad overclock, system drivers not up-to-date, video card drivers corrupted (rare but it happens) are just some examples.  FSX will usually load with a corrupted file but not every time.  The dll.xml is an example of a file that will usually load successfully but fail periodically.  Download and install Notepad++ (Google).  This program works better than the one installed by Windows.  Use it to open up your dll.xml (right click dll.xml and select open with Notepad++).  You can then see the structure of the dll.xml better and maybe see any corruption better.  Look for duplicate entries/old software and remove those entries.  Save and start up FSX again.  The following link provides details on how the dll.xml is structured and how to troubleshoot it - http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/a92/dllxml-information-and-troubleshooting.aspx.  The dll.xml is located in the same folder as your fsx.cfg.

I run a system driver scanner once a week too.  Windows Update does not update your system drivers or the system bus or usb ports or HDD's (as examples) so I run this freeware program called Driver Scanner (there are several programs that update system drivers.  Just Google how do I update my drivers).  All of them are freeware until it finds drivers out of date.  You can either pay a small registration fee to have the program update them or you can look at what the scanner program found and Google for the updated driver, download it, and install it yourself.  My driver scanner program automatically sets up a restore point before installing the update drivers so, if you do it yourself, make sure you set up a restore point in case something goes wrong.

You are getting very, very, very close to completely uninstalling FSX, running a registry cleaner like CCleaner, and then reinstalling FSX.  If you do that, then I suggest using the following guide as it provides details where hidden files are located that have to be removed before you can reinstall FSX - http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jim
