There is a button/light on the Autopilot panel of the 777. Its located between LNAV button and the HDG selector. I wonder what function or purpose is it for?

Not sure exactly what you're referring to, but check out FCOM Vol 2, chapter 4, pg 4.10.1 (Mode Control Panel). The answer you seek should be in there.

If I remember it correctly, it's not a button nor a light. It's actually an ambient light sensor, to adjust the brightness level of the backlighting.

Steven, I remember checking 1.22.3 for glare shield layout and it was not labeled. Thank you for the Chapter reference.
