6800GT is slow... anyone have any ideas?

Ok, So my other card is a 9800 Pro- not too shabby. But I figured what the hell, I wanted to see what this new card could do. At least it would let me turn up the AA with no frame hit right? So I uninstalled the 9800 pro, and stuck the card it. Upon reboot, i download the latest official Nvidia drivers.I fired up FS2004, and noticed a few frames less than my 9800.hmmm, can't be right- I checked the card settings- tuned it for performance-yep, still slow. So I decided to let 3D Mark 2001 see if I was going crazy. Nope! Down to 15,000 3D marks. So I found that Radlinker was still installed- removed that. Found some ATI uninstallers on their website and ran those. Downloaded the latest beta drivers on the ATI site-Nope! Still slow. #####? I downloaded coolbits 2 to take a look at more advanced stuff- overclocked it slightly. STILL SLOWER!One thing I noticed in the card settings is where it lists the AGP options- everthing says AGP 3.0, and the next line shows 8x for the AGP speed, but on that row, under OS it's listed as only 2x. Any ideas what that might be?Anybody else have similiar probs?

"Any ideas what that might be?"Did you try reinstalling your chipset drivers? If your AGP setting is goofy then the chipset drivers went south on you.Hope this helps,Greg

Are you using the high performance clouds or the original clouds?I upgraded to a 6800 Ultra from a 9800 Pro and get about 40% faster performance with the 6800 Ultra at 1600x1200 4x FSAA 8x AF only if I use the original clouds and overcast conditions. On the other hand if I use the downloaded high performance clouds my 9800 Pro beats my 6800 Ultra in overcast conditions by about 10%. I also have a similar system to yours and seem to think that I should be getting better performance in all cases with my 6800 Ultra but I'm not. I have my AGP at 8x according to the Sandra benchmark.

Any ideas what that might be?>>Anybody else have similiar probs?Hi,Just trying to clarify...9800P will = or even better a 6800GT in FS9 without filtering, however if you start to turn up AA and AF to max at High rez you should see almost 100% gain or double the FPS with the 6800GT. So if this is not what you are seeing you do need to give this more attention and the ATI drivers are quite sticky to remove but also as Greg stated a good re-setting of your Chipset-AGPdrivers may be in order. You might try calling costomer support for your new card as I am sure they have had to deal with this and will probably walk you right through it.Hope it goes well, let us know.

OK, I reinstalled the chipset drivers, and flashed the BIOS- but no change. I can live with FS9, since my framerates are decent- but they have dropped. What irks me is that 3D Mark 2001 SE got worse! It's a benchmark of the GPU, so it should be quite a bit faster- definately not slower.Sandra shows my PC spot on with the reference PC, so I know it's definately a problem with the video card. Can one of you guys with an Nvidia card do me a favor and check the AGP settings in your driver properties? My Max AGP setting for the OS is still showing 2x, and I want to know if that's normal. You may have to run the coolbits 2 registry tweak to show the AGP settings- I'm not sure. It just opens up some more advanced driver options.http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815

The good part about having a 6800GT is having FSAA on doesnt, really effect peformance at all. As you stated, you can run FSAA and AF to higher levels with a 6800 Series (or better) card, true, but saying that turning off FSAA and AF will cause the 9800 Pro to be the same or faster is completely false. If 2 systems are built using exactly the same hardware, except for different video cards, how can a 9800 Pro be faster? It is technologically slower in every single category. Not to mention it has less video ram (which is a whole other discussion)...unless you are talking about the 9800 Pro 256 which is a complete joke. lolNow if we talk about DX9 games then the situation is even more amplified. The 6800GT completely destroys the 9800 Pro on an even higher level. lol*EDIT*P.S. Don't take my post as an attack (I just re-read it and it sounds a little inflammatory but it isn't meant to be!!!!!! I just don't have time at this moment to really go back and re-write everything. I hope you understand). :)

You have only mentioned that your fps have "slowed down" which is a relative term. I think it would be useful to state from what to what.Since above certain values, fps don't add anything, I also wonder if, with your slowdown, you are experiencing any difference in smoothness. Before installing your new card, were you experiencing ANY stutters in turns and/or over dense areas? If not, why buy a new card?If you were, what difference, if any, in smoothness have you experienced with your new card?I think such comments would help you get help.Regards

I'm sure you mean 6800...Thats great! However on average what I stated is just average, just the same you would get the same results as was stated even using a 6800Ultra...It dont matter filtering is where it's at.Go check out any site that publishes FS9 benchmarks it the picture should be clear.

Christian, have you tried Drivercleaner to scrub your registry and system clean of driver entries? It works for both ATI and nVidia drivers (as well as others). http://www.drivercleaner.net/The proper procedure for installing drivers is Chipset>DirectX>Video Drivers.Hope this helps,Greg

Paul, I added a section into my post.BTW, I edited out the 6900 part. I guess my wife is right, I can't see stuff right in front of me. :-lol:)Btw, excellent site!

Definitely need to head over to http://www.drivercleaner.net/ and clean out those ATI drivers from the registry.I had the same problem, though going the other direction from Nvidia to ATI.__Josh

Ok - first thing to try:1. Go to www.driverheaven.net and DL DriverCleaner 3.3 and install it. Download the latest Nvidia driver for the 6800 and the latest chipset driver for your motherboard.2. Right click My Computer and then properties. On the Hardware Tab, hit Driver Signing, set the top one (Ignore) and check system default, then hit OK, now hit Windows Update, set it to "Never Search Windows Update for Drivers" - this will prevent you from having to unplug your net connection to stop it from installing an old driver from the site.3. Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and get rid of anything related to either ATI or Nvidia - do NOT reboot if any of them ask you too - just go through and get rid of all of them before rebooting.4. Restart the system in safe mode (tap F8 while booting up)5. Run DriverCleaner and clean all ATI and Nvidia entries in the list as well as running the "Cab Cleaner" on driver.cab and sp2.cab.6. Reboot in normal mode, cancel any new hardware found windows that pop up. Install the latest motherboard chipset driver. Reboot.7. Cancel the new hardware found for the 6800 again, and now install the latest Nvidia driver. Reboot. Set AA/AF in the control panel.8. Delete your FS9.cfg and allow the sim to build a new one taking the new card into account. If that doesn't solve the problem, you're going to need to reformat and clean install XP with the 6800 in there from the start. This would actually be the best thing to do in any large hardware upgrade situation...

Any ideas what that might be?>>Anybody else have similiar probs? My system also shows this but after extensive searching of the Internet and the guru3d forums I suspect that it is not a problem. Many people have it and opinions are mixed as to the cause but most agree that it is not a problem with the card or motherboard but rather a problem with XP reporting. Some people report that older cards show correctly and that on some motherboards if you switch to 1x the os will show 4x.I've decided not to wory about it.Jon

His system performance however would indicate otherwise.
