How Can I Find The "Worst" Weather?

Featured Replies

Is there an easy way to find bad winter weather conditions, aside from plowing through Yahoos weather service?ricardo

Ricardo,For the US I usually start with the NOAA Radar http://www.nws.noaa.gov/satellite_images/national.jpg then dig from there.JimBob"Master of the Sr. Moment"Sorry, I just wanted to post the link but nothing but the image shows. Right click on the image for the link ( I hope ).

There are websites that present the worst current weather areas worldwide. Maybe someone in here remembers the URL, I don't at the moment... :-hmmm

When I do find some really bad weather, I save it in Active Sky , and then can fly it anytime I want. I have some great snowstorms and a few Hurricanes saved up.

You can get alot of info from various weather centers, most of their weather maps are normally availible for free. I'm used to getting them by radio (kind of fax system without the telphone), but many publish them on the web as well. You can probably find some for your area of interest with a google search. Here is an example of a surface pressure map for the atlantic and Europe:http://www.met-office.gov.uk/weather/charts/animation.htmlYou can see how the winds will blow, by looking at the ISOBar lines (The black ones), the closer they are, the more wind. The wind will allways blow counter clock wise around a low pressure and clockwise around a high pressure(opposite on the southern hemisphere). You can also see the various fronts, which indicate precipication. This is very simplified, and I make gurantees as the weather services are known to be wrong in many cases. :)If you look at the map now the 25/12 you can see there should be very calm weather in the mediterranian, some heavy winds in the Denmark strait, also heavy winds in the Davis strait. So basicly if you want severe weather, you should find it, if take a trip from reykjavik to mestersvig (or Danmarkshavn if it's included in the sim) or the opposite, depending on if you want head or tail wind. (In R/L there is a DHC 6 flight every 2 - 4 weeks, or used to be )Or you could take a ferry flight (typically GA) from north eastern Canada to Narsassuaq or you could run north to Alert or Thule, mostly military transports this time of year.Hope this helps alittle, even though it's more general weather fore casts.CheersPeter

...or you can use real-time aviation weather (and short-term forecasts) from your local aviation authority:http://www.flightplanning.navcanada.ca/Lat...ldwx_000-e.htmladded benefit: you learn to decipher the stuff ;-)

Try servinfo !!!There you can download the complete set of metars from a)NOAA :( VATSIM c)IVAO-servers (or only for Europe, or America, if you like). Then you can have it sorted by several conditions which you can specify first like wind, visibility, cloud/CBs. This is really fantastic and you have all the data in about 2 minutes (with DSL-connection speed). On the map-view you can also show the metars with corresponding symbols next to each airport (when there's low visib. in KJFK it'll show a fog-symbol next to the airport's position). As mentioned earlier, you specify at which condition the symbol will appear (for fog the standard may be 5000 meters but I have set it to appear at or below 1000 meters).Let me/us know if you like it!Stefan Bergert

If you use ServInfo then just download the weather there. Although not always 100% accurate, it's generally what you will see in FS anyway. It gives a really goor graphic display & you can set parameters you're looking for ie: airports with overcast under 1000ft & many more
