December 29, 200421 yr It seems a lot of people are having trouble installing these textures, so I am going to try give a walkthrough. This assume you know how the windows filesystem work.Everything we do inside fs will be shown as: .../scenery/world/ because some may not have fs installed in default location. This example shows we are inside "your fs folder"/scenery/world/1. Copy/unzip the content of the textures switch zip to .../scenery/world. There should be 2 files and 4 folders.Filenames:TextureSwitch.exeTextureSwitch.iniFolders:NorthEuropeSouthEuropeMyOwnMixUsa (please note: dont use all caps on this name even if folder in zip do)2. Copy the files in ...scenery/world/texture to all the new folders. Just the files inside, not the folder itself.3. Now remove the texture folder completely. Do whatever you want with it, but there should be NO folder called texture in ...scenery/world/ at this point.4. Run the program in each of the other zip files. Make sure you change the destination the program asks for if you have installed FS in a different location than default. The destination would be ...world/scenery/NorthEurope inside your FS folder.5. Run the TextureSwitch program, and select North Europe. What this little program does is, it changes the folder name of the one you selected to "texture". This is why we had to delete/remove the texture folder before. If you want to go back to the original textures you had before, you can just run the program and select any of the other options. All the other folders have the original texture files in them.I hope this helps.JT
December 29, 200421 yr Hi JTI saw your post and I followed your instructions to the letter. I dont know if you have USA Roads installed but I do and after doing the install and selecting North Europe and loading up FS9 to start at KIAD at the 50% load up mark instant CTD. I then used the switch in the program and switched to the USA texture folder. This of course held all my previous Textures files right. You would think that there should be no problem but no at the same load up spot for KIAD I got a CTD again with my own textures. I suspect there is something with the Switch program because as soon as I remove it from the file folder and just have the one texture folder with my own texture files there is no problem. I love the textures and if you have a solution to this problem I'm all ears.Don
December 29, 200421 yr >>destination would be ...world/scenery/NorthEurope inside your>FS folder.>>5. Run the TextureSwitch program, and select North Europe.Does this mean that at present only the North Europe is available?Where is the border between North and South europe?
December 29, 200421 yr Hi Don,I dont have the USA roads, so I cannot test this. You could try make a backup of your original files and then copy Lennart's textures into the texture folder. But you will have to do everything manually if you want to go back. Can't see why USA roads would conflict with this switch program though. Roads are vtp and they use default road textures and afaik Lennart didnt change those. You could go to the support site and ask them to test this. They should know what changes USA roads do, and maybe figure out why this happen.Sorry I couldnt be of more help.JT
December 29, 200421 yr The textures were made for North Europe, but can be used other places in the world with similar vegetation.I am not sure how the textures are used in FS, so correct me if Im wrong here. But I think they are used in combination depending on what the landclass file(s) calls for. So that means FS will use for example the same rock/bare mountain texture several places in the world. Because there just isnt enough landclass IDs to include all those different looks. If they included all possible vegetation and rock formations, I bet we could tripple the size of the texture folder, and they would have spent a whole lot more time just doing the landclass file.Ok, went a bit off topic there, but you get the idea :)I dont know where the borders are for the different looks in textures. The reason for the textureswitch is, I hope, because Lennart may have plans to make other sets more suitable for the other regions.JT
December 29, 200421 yr JTUSA roads puts 4 file folders inside the scenery/world/texture folder. I have done what you suggested and unfortunately I get the same result. There must be some sort of texture conflict with the 2 programs. Too bad because I did like the look of the textures. Maybe someone else with a lot more computer knowledge than I will come up with a solution.Don
December 30, 200421 yr Author I can't help feeling that some of you are making this more complicated than is really necessary.I created a new folder, called it 'NorthEurope', filled it with the FS9 default textures and then overwrote the file contents with Lennart's replacements (at this stage in his ground scenery replacement texture development not all are overwritten yet). Obviously some fine tuning will be needed in due course as I decide, for example, what water textures I want replaced. It just seemed reasonable to kick off with the FS9 defaults + Lennart's overwrites as that is how he intended to achieve the correct blends. With this structure, all I have to do is rename the 'texture' folder to, say, 'FScene' and the NorthEurope folder to 'texture' and go fly. This preserves my highly customised worldtexture folder content. This, I find, gives me the best control over what is installed. Also, I keep track of the various texture installations with a text file I call 'Installed Textures (Summary)' and update as I go along, make changes, etc. The relevant segment is displayed in the second image file displayed below. (x = Installed, o = Not Installed)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/101990.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/101991.jpgHope this alternative approach is of some help.Mike
December 30, 200421 yr MikeThat may be a solution, however One question, do you have USA Roads installed?Don
December 30, 200421 yr Author Hi Don,"One question, do you have USA Roads installed?".....Yes I do. Note the subfolders above World in the first image. My understanding is USA Roads is treated like scenery with a higher priority than FS9's defaults in scenery.cfg. Therefore, I am assuming USA Roads will always display in the sim and won't be influenced by the ground textures used by the sim in the sceneryworldtexture folder. In any event, I doubt whether, even if this is not the case, that this is a major issue at the moment since Lennart's NorthEurope new textures only affect a relatively small part of the USA.I downloaded Lennart's textures simply because I have been eagerly awaiting his ground textures to compliment other installed addons which already serve to enhance my Norwegian experience. My wife has very little interest in Flight Simming, but she keeps hinting she would like to spend a holiday in Norway one day. Maybe this will serve to whet her appetite for sharing her husband's virtual experience of this beautiful country ;)If I fly in the USA or elsewhere in Europe, I switch to my other texture folder which contains the FScene ground textures along with the myriad other modifications. I like Ruud Faber's work and right now it is doubtful that I will use Lennart's USA and Southern European textures when they are released. Then again, who knows?!Mike
