My (simulated) New Year's Resolutions

As an amazing year in flight simulation is drawing to a close, I was reflecting on what this year has brought (besides making my wallet much, much lighter  ) and what the new year might bring.  Which scared me a bit, since I doubt my wife will let me spend much on my hobby once she;s seen how much I've spent since Black Friday.  So as such, here are my New Years Resolutions: the 'Simulated' version, that is!

1. Discover the areas I already have.  I always have this pressing urge upon seeing the release of amazing looking airports or scenery to say to myself 'Oh, I need to have that, I'll love to fly there.'  However, then I end up warming up the credit card and installing the latest and greatest scenery... only to have it remain unvisited past an initial exploratory flight.  This year I resolve to make the most of the scenery that I already own.  First up? FTX AU; I plan on loading this up with all of the freeware available at OZx and making it my home for a bit.

2. Become a better pilot on fewer types.  I could of written ' Become a better Q400 pilot', or 'Become a better 732 pilot', or 'Become a better B-55 pilot' or... on and on and on.  I own so many great planes, but I fly so few of them past 2 or 3 hours, and maybe a extremely small collection get to 10 or 20 hours. I would estimate that I acquired 35+ aircraft in 2013....  However, I would say that I have slightly less than 5 hours per week in which to devote to all aspects of my simulation. 5 hours x 52 weeks is 260 hours in a year, which is enough time to become very experienced on a few planes... or step into a lot of them and go 'Ooooh shiny...'.  This year I resolve to do the former.  I'm sure my wallet will thank me for it!

3. Stop fussing and start flying.  We've all done it.  We get clear of all of our other numerous responsibilities, and settle down in front of the pc with plans to spend a bit of time flying and.... "Oh, I'll just check the forums for a few minutes.  And what about the pre-release thread on that developer site.  And oh, lets check the library to see if any new paints have been released out for the aircraft I'm flying.  Or that other library.  Or that other site.  Or that other aircraft that I quit flying two months ago but am telling myself I'll take up again real soon.  Oh, but look at this freeware airport in an area I've never, ever flown before and probably never will.  Looks great, lets get it.  But the cloud textures in that screenshot, they looked sweet... I wonder where they were from.  Wait, was it the cloud textures that looked good, or the weather engine?"  Yep, it happens, and before you know it, you have to get to bed in order to have a semblance of wakefulness for your morning commute.  This year, I resolve to spend more of my 260 hours per year that I spend on my flight simulation hobby actually flying planes.

4. Finish one or two of my projects.  I enjoy scenery creation.  I enjoy programming.  I enjoy customizing my simulation experience.  And as such, I have tons of half finished projects sitting around. Landclass projects for areas I've lived, ADE projects for places I'm interested in, Gmax projects for city buildings I wanted to see in the simulator.  Add that to half a dozen simulation related programming projects raging from finished but undocumented, all the way to rough proof of concept code.  Add that to several half-finished paints for planes that I've managed to log 3 or 4 total hours on.  And add that to all the smaller projects I have, such as custom regional AI, or adding worldwide AI ships. This year I resolve to finish at least one of my projects.  Maybe without even starting ten more...

5. Resist temptation to break the above resolutions!  As list these, I'm realizing the futile nature of what I've written above.  I don't think I'll take any money bets on how long it'll take before I break any of these resolutions, but I'll give it my best!

Anyone have any they'd like to share / admit / confess to??

I think this is an excellent 'concept'- use what you already have. Live in the present. Be efficient. Quit worrying about what's 'to come' and what's already in your hangar. Love it.

Be blessed, and Happy New Year.
