When departing from KRNO...Reno, NV I'm always confused by the SID.  The initial part of the SID has an aircraft flying over the FMG VOR.  The FMG VOR is almost at a 90 degree angle East of runways 16R or 16L.  It seems impractical to fly a heading departure of around 160 degrees then to make a turn of 120 degrees or so to FMG.

I guess my question is: in the real world would aircraft departing from KRNO be expected to pass over the FMG VOR?

Yes, you fly south for 3 miles off the I-RNO then turn to FMG, hold at FMG if necessary to reach the MEA. This assumes a RWY 16 departure.

Or if flying online (or real world), and VMC, tell the controller you can maintain clearance from terrain and obstacles and they should let you skip FMG onto your next waypoint.
