I use the hat switch on my joystick to pan around in outside view. But lately it's noticeably sluggish when panning round. It doesn't have that smooth movement when panning like it use to have.

Any ideas what my be causing this please.

This is my camera cfg file.

You may need to post your Fsx Cfg, so others can take a look at your settings.   There are many things that can cause stuttering when panning including wrong settings in cfg.   When I get stutters, it's usually because the CPU is being over-taxed (ie. frames dropping down to low teens or lower).  As soon as FPS is up to par, then panning is very smooth.   Just a suggestion to test out.

Thanks for the reply Chris

I have tweaked my FSX.cfg recently via the FSX Geneius YouTube video. The graphics are so much better and smoother, but whether this is also the cause of the slight lagging when panning in outside view I don't know.

Anyway, here is my fsx.cfg log below.

I'm not sure whether this has anything to do with it, but you have multiple Display Device entries:

[DISPLAY.Device.AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series.0]
Mode=1920x1080x32
TriLinear=1                                                             somewhere in the middle of the FSX.cfg

and

[DISPLAY.Device.AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series.0.0]
Mode=1280x720x32
TriLinear=1                                                               at the very end.

Unless you have a multi-monitor setup, I doubt you should have two entries. Perhaps remove one of them (preferably the second one, as it has a lower resolution), or deactivate it by putting two slashes // in front of each of the three lines.

You could also back up the above file, remove it from its original directory and start FSX. It will build a new one, and you can see if that new configuration still shows that behavior - if it does, some tweak might be the culprit, so bring the tweaks back one by one to see which one it is.

Thank you for your reply.

I removed the double insert but it didn't make any difference, but I left it out anyway as I don't have double monitors.

I then tried FSX without the frame rate limiter activated and that too made no difference.

I then backed up the current tweaked cfg and then created a new one. Tested again without the limiter, and that also made no difference.

I did note that when in spot view, panning is all nice and smooth, but in locked spot view (which I prefer) that is when the panning is not so smooth. I'm not saying it jerks madly when panning round in outside view, it just isn't as smooth as spot view, which I know it should be.

Bit of a baffler this one.

Other tests to try:  test out other values for your Buffer Pools instead of = 0.   Default is 4 million;  go upwards from there up to 10 million.  Also, turn down autogen, traffic, clouds, etc (or, go to default values), and test these.

Thanks Chris. I will give it a go the next time I'm on the PC. But if I have already tried a brand new cfg file wouldn't that rule out the buffer pool numbers since I would have been using the default setting.

Are you running your pan view via FSUIPC or just FSX?

Just FSX

I tried adjusting the Buffer Pool values all the way up to 10 but it made no difference. You mentioned that default is 4 million. I looked at a default cfg file and I couldn't see Buffer Pool listed anywhere.

I didn't adjust any other settings that you mention as FSX was working fine on these settings.

As a test I installed FSX on my wife's laptop which has allot less spec than my PC and it worked fine, with panning in outside view working as it should, fast and smooth.

I hate to admit defeat, but unless someone can help me out and come up with a solution I fear it may come to the dreaded reinstall. It's not so much reinstalling FSX that I mind, it's all the add on's that are a pain and time consuming.

I've just a suspicion that it's something to do with the frame rate limiter. Even though I'm not activating it to start FSX for test purposes I feel it is still causing the problem. I may be wrong.

Buffer Pools are not in the cfg by default.   If changes are to be made, then a separate entry has to be made (as you have done in your cfg;  though not sure whether 'Poolsize=0' is correct, or should it be 'UsePools=0 or Bufferpools=0.)   Poolsize=n is used when a number (not 0 or 1) is given.   I stand corrected on that.   When you installed FSX on your wife's laptop, did you install all your addons as well?  If not, then try running FSX without the addons on your computer and see whether there is any improvement.

If the above fails, you could try locking your frames in FSX to 25.   Anyway, worth trying these options before the dreaded re-install!!

Don't mention that dreaded word 'reinstall' Chris. It sends a shudder down my spine :)

No. I didn't put any add on's on my wife's laptop. The only add on's I have are a couple of airports and GSX ground services, which have never given any trouble. Apart from them the only other add on's if you can call them that are just aircraft textures.

Frame rate has never been a problem. Flying in FSX is smooth, it's the outside panning that is the bug bear. But I'll give your suggestion a go.

It's probably something silly somewhere that's causing it. But as usual it's finding the blighter.

Oh well, onwards and upwards. But I feel hand on heart that I will end up doing the inevitable :(

I'll keep you informed.

Thanks

Hi Steve,

There are still many other tweaks around that you can try, including the AVSIM Basic Config. Guide, so you may want to consider all options before a reinstall.  You may even find that after a reinstall, things haven't changed much!  And that could be devastating.  I would leave off a reinstall till all hope is gone.  I even read somewhere that the View (pan) Hat Switch setting in your Settings - Controls, must be set to Repeat with slider to full right.   But I suppose yours reflects this.

At which stage do you get your panning stutters:  after first loading the flight, midway, or towards the end of the flight?   I sometimes get a massive frame rate drop only on short final and am still working on this problem.  The only (temporary) solution I've found, is to save the flight, exit FSX completely, reload the flight and continue on final approach.  Not the ideal way, but as you know it's very difficult doing a precision approach with frames going into the single digits.  Doing a reload of the Sim, brings the frames back to 30.  So you could even try saving the flight when the stutters start, then reloading it, to see whether there is any difference to panning problem.

All the best,

Chris
