I can't speak for everyone, of course, but in my case it's "ceremonial deference." It's totally fake, and it works both ways.  She knows darn well those new shoes are hers regardless of what I say just as much as she knows that the new graphics card is mine whether she signs off on it or not.

 

But we go through the ritual of mock mutual approval and everybody stays happy.
