I Just Took The 780 Plunge

Featured Replies

Just ordered a new GTX780Ti to replace my old GTX480........

And also supplemented it with an Asus PB278Q 27" 2560x1440 monitor with one of those new fangled PLS LED screens.

Should all arrive tomorrow. Really looking forward to cranking up the res on FSX and XP10 with the new display!

I just hope it all arrives after my wife leaves for work, otherwise I've got some fast talking to do....

Looking forward to some comments.  I have both FSX and XP10.  I have a GTX580 and have no doubt the Ti would improve my XP10, but I'm skeptical that FSX would take advantage of it.

Yeah I'm not expecting much of a framerate improvement with FSX... if nothing else I should be able to push up the anti-aliasing which should look very nice with the higher res display. I might get some better FPS with heavy clouds too. XP10 should see a really good improvement, namely I should be able to run HDR and some higher anti-aliasing with good framerates. The 780Ti might also come in handy when EDGE finally makes an appearance in DCS!

Headline differene is the Ti has 25% more cores. Basically a souped up more powerful 780. Check out the performance section of the above links and there's there's some performance figures there.

As I said, not expecting miracles with FSX, but it should make a significant improvement with X-Plane.

I went from an AMD6970 to a Gigabyte GTX 780 and saw about a 25% improvement in frame rates. I am using a stock i7 2600.

I managed to convince my 'copilot' some time ago that I needed a Dell U3011 monitor and a GeForce GTX680 with 2Gb to go with my i7 3770K....FSX is now a dream to fly.

These big monitors are great at 2560 x 1600.

Here's a hint - take a few good pics of your missus - with her agreement, of course - I use the 16 x 10 format on my LX3 camera - when she sees the quality on your new monitor - and her pic shown full screen - you've got it made !

Sneaky, eh ?

Not really. It make life a little more bearable ....

Bill

Not relevant to 780's, but FWIW I recently moved from a GTX460 1GB to a GTX770 4GB and I am amazed by the difference. I upgraded for other reasons than FSX enhancement, as I frankly never expected a card to make much of an impact, but boy does it! Basically running maxed out and completely smooth with extremely complex add on soup. Trying to figure if it's the GPU or more VRAM that's making the bigger difference. Somehow my money is on the VRAM.

My other half in an interior designer and has been doing more and more work from home lately, mostly on her 17" laptop....

So I'm going to sweeten the deal by giving her my old monitor, which is a six year old 27" 1920x1200 Dell 2707WFP.

Right then.... the card and new monitor arrived, after a very quick and dirty test......

FSX, running DX10, Orbx PNW, on the runway at Darrington, default Cessna 172, fair weather theme.... all scenery sliders full right except autogen at very dense.... 1920x1200 res, 8x FSAA, 2xSGAA, application controlled AF..... on my old GTX480 I'd get an fps in the mid to high 20's.

With the new GTX780Ti, pushing the higher res screen at 2560x1440, bumped up the SGAA to 4x and now 16x AF in Nvidia Inspector.... same situation I'm getting 38-40fps.

Not bad at all, far better than I was expecting!

In XP10 I loaded up the 777 at EGMH, HD Mesh v2, SkyMaxx Pro.... kept texture res at very high, maxed out all other scenery settings, HDR on, and SkyMaxx clouds maxed out,,, 4xSSAA + FXAA sitting on the runway I'm getting 26fps. Throw in a high detail overcast with SkyMaxx Pro clouds (all SkyMaxx Pro settings still at max) and the FPS drops to 10. Maybe not as good as I was hoping for, but then again I was at max wil all settings and the SSAA and HDR are big fps hitters in XP10. I reckon of I ditch the HDR (never really noticed much of a difference with it on anyway) or maybe lower the SSAA I can get to well over 30 fps. More testing and experimentation needed I think!

Rise of Flight and IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad Alpha are smooth as butter. I just loaded up the new demo flight over the city of Stalingrad with 50km scenery radius and the 780Ti didn't even break a sweat with all graphics settings on Ultra.

I'll check out DCS later on, but expect it to be ultra smooth as it ran pretty well even on my old 480.

The new display is pretty nice, but needs calibrating as the colours are off with the settings straight of the box. To be fair I've read this in several reviews of the monitor when I was researching it.

Nick

Good feedback, I was just researching to better understand what to expect from moving from 560Ti to 780.  Sorry but the 780Ti is just a bit too far out for me at the moment.

Its amazing how different pc give different resulrs with fsx, I have I7 3770K @ 4.5 ghz 16 gig if ram at 1600 mhz, samsung pro ssd for win 7 64 bit ultimate, another ssd and a velociraptor for fsx and scenery, I upgraded from a 6970 to the Evga GTX 780 classified, and got no improvement in performance, still have micro stutters and texture blurring, abd that is with a complete fresh install of windows and fsx following nuck n guide.
