Am I supposed to be able to play FSX without the DVD while playing?

Without realising i've been playing FSX (Gold version) without the DVD in my DVD drive. I take it i'm supposed to be able to do this? I never knew that I was able to play without the DVD in the drive until i opened the disc tray after a flight today and saw it was not the FSX disc but actually a Top Gear DVD sitting in there!

Okay. Good, that clears it up. Having very recently gone from FS9 to FSX not having to put the disc in there anymore confused the crap outta me.
