January 23, 201412 yr Hello, I've just recently worked on setting up FSX as a capable home flight simulator and this is my first forum post. I'm establishing a home flight simulator to help me get ready for flying the Lancair Legacy my wife and I have been building for years. I was surprised how smoothly the installation and all the upgrades went -- amazed actually. I installed FSX, Acceleration, the RealAir Lancair Legacy, the RealityXP GNS530 for it, Megascenery for my region, Just Flight's Traffic X, MadKatz Cyborg joystick (ambidextrous), TrackIR head tracker, and Siatek Combat Rudder Pedals. Everything worked fine for a number of weeks and maybe about 10 hours of use. Then yesterday, launched FSX and selected the Free Flight menu and there's a delay for about 7 seconds and then a Fatal Error is reported and FSX crashes to the desktop (CTD). I read through the AV-Sim CTD Guide and tried most of what was recommended. I couldn't find the FSX.cfg file recommended to remove and force a rebuild -- only four separate .cfg files. So that wasn't done. I'd sure appreciate some help resolving this problem. I've spent about 10 hours troubleshooting already. I have no idea what suddenly changed that torpedoed my FSX installation. Thanks in advance. My AppCrash report is below and my system configuration is in my profile. ntdll.dll module seems to be the culprit... January 23, 201412 yr I read through the AV-Sim CTD Guide and tried most of what was recommended. I couldn't find the FSX.cfg file recommended to remove and force a rebuild -- only four separate .cfg files. So that wasn't done. It is located in a hidden folder - C:\Users\(Your User Name)AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX. You have to unhide your system folders to find it - http://www.wikihow.com/Unhide-Folders-in-Windows-7. I have so far fixed my ntdll.dll errors by checking and rechecking my overclock settings in the BIOS (I see you may not be overclocked). The most important setting to look at is the memory frequency, timings, and voltages for your system memory. If you are not using XMP Profile settings for your memory, then this is likely the cause. NTDLL.dll errors are interrelated to StackHash memory errors too. I found that MyTrafficX 5.4c was causing those crashes as I disabled MyTraffic in the Scenery Library and the crashes went away. I see you have a Dell 30 inch Ultra monitor. Are you using that for your monitor on your Laptop? Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! January 23, 201412 yr Author Thank you FireHawK/Jim. I found and renamed the FSX.cfg file, forcing a rebuild on FSX start, and it did not solve the problem. I am not using XMP. How do I find out what my memory settings are supposed to be and then edit them? Why would FSX work fine for so long and then fail this way? I disabled the Traffic and lowered the settings on everything and the problem remains. I run my big 30" Dell monitor from my Alienware gaming laptop. BTW, the laptop has two graphics cards in there running in SLI. I sure appreciate your help. I'm starting to lose hope. Without knowing why this happened and how to prevent it, I will not entertain deleting and reinstalling FSX with all the time involved when it will likely happen again. Maybe this is what happens when software is no longer supported by its creators... I haven't given up yet... Thanks, ValinHawK
January 23, 201412 yr Why would FSX work fine for so long and then fail this way? That's a good question. When you first installed fsx/acceleration, fsx ran great. Super great fps. Then you started installing addons and things went downhill from there. How do I find out what my memory settings are supposed to be and then edit them? You are using a laptop. You have to go into the Dell BIOS and make sure they are set properly. XMP is the supreme best settings for the installed memory. You have to download and run CPU-Z. Under the SPD Tab you will see your installed memory and then below that the timing tables. The column to the far right is usually the XMP memory settings. Look at the Timing Tables and all the different settings. Now go to the Memory tab and it will show you what timings are set on your system. Do they match the XMP settings? If not, you can go into the BIOS and change them. BTW, the laptop has two graphics cards in there running in SLI. Here's some information about running FSX in SLI - http://www.simforums.com/forums/nickn-nividia-inspector-sli-settings_topic41980.html. NickN use to work for NVidia or so I understand. The AVSIM CTD Guide has all of the known fixes for NTDLL crashes. NTDLL is memory related so keep that in mind as you troubleshoot. There is no known fix that fixes all NTDLL crashes. A 30 inch monitor sure takes up a lot of memory (I have one too). Have you thought about disconnecting the monitor and using the laptop screen? This way you can discount any possibility that it is your monitor or your sli configuration. Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! January 24, 201412 yr Author Thanks FireHawK/Jim, Actually, the addons didn't seem to affect performance... I ran CPU-Z. It isn't clear that the far right column is the XMP memory settings. I just learned about Prepar3D. Can I import my RealAir Lancair Legacy into it? Should I put my energy into using Prepar3D rather than FSX...? Thanks, ValinHawK
January 24, 201412 yr Author FireHawK/Jim, In the process of looking for other suspect files I was examining again the file in the FSX folder that is in the AppData tree. I noticed that there was a file titled fsx but with no extension, though the Type column showed CFG. Before I'd renamed a different file that was listed as fsx.cfg -- which had no effect. So I thought, well maybe this other file is the actual cfg file. So I renamed it and restarted FSX and this time it went through all these questions to confirm that various AddOns could be trusted and the Free Flight Menu came up fine -- no CTD! Thank you for your time and help both with the AVSIM CTD Guide (I'd guess you created it) and your counsel on this forum. It is nice to have the simulator running again and I'm much smarter about its inner workings than before. I'm interested in Prepar3D and will see if I can find a place in the Forum where that is discussed. Thanks again! ValinHawK
January 24, 201412 yr So I renamed it and restarted FSX and this time it went through all these questions to confirm that various AddOns could be trusted and the Free Flight Menu came up fine -- no CTD! Glad you got it fixed. Must have been a bad tweak. Most FSX CTD's can be fixed by renaming the Fsx.cfg. And you are not the only one who has renamed the wrong one. FSX generates a FSX.txt document whenever there is a crash. I suspect they were going to have that sent to Microsoft whenever you had a crash after the program crashes and says, Microsoft has found a problem and will close FSX (or something like that). I wonder how many people have employed tweaks to the wrong "config" and that's why they come back and say the tweak didn't work for them. I have my Fsx.cfg on my desktop so I can get to it easily and make quick modifications. In the folder options there is a switch to turn on showing extensions.
