February 8, 201412 yr Hi ... I have just upgraded Motherboard & CPU and wondered whether its worth doing a clean install or just swap HDD over ? Any thoughts would be helpful Cheers JC
February 8, 201412 yr JC, After building several pc's - there are a couple thoughts: 1. Many folks will say a clean fresh install is the only way - and they have a valid point. 2. I clone my existing drive, to a new drive - AFTER - making sure the os is functioning at 100%, all updates, defragged, in essence, just getting it in superb condition. I then d/l'd the latest drivers for my new motherboard and put them on my existing desktop - 3. I build my new pc, putting in the new cloned drive. Start the pc and look for any error codes on the lcd on motherboard. Correct if necessary. Look up the code on your existing pc at google - such as a code F7 - or - CC - correct them. 4. I then let the new pc boot - and after it has settled in to desktop - I install the new drivers for my new motherboard. 5. You MAY have to re-register Windows with MS - Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. No big deal. Again, what I have stated, WORKS for me. I'm not trying to get a "war" started here over what works for me. Good luck, Tom Tom Higginbotham Intel 4820K - OC'd 4.8 ghz / ASUS x79 Deluxe Premium MB, 16 gig Corsair Dominator ram, CorsairRM1000 PSU, Corsair H-105 Liquid, EVGA 770 Classified, 37" Samsung TV/Monitor, Samsung 840 EVO SSD 1TB, WD VRaptor, 1TB
February 8, 201412 yr Author Well I currently have P3D on a seperate HDD, so not sure whether to invest in a SSD and do a complete clean install or not. Cheers JC
February 8, 201412 yr JC, I also have P3D on a separate VelicoRaptor.... I'm going to build a higher-end unit than I have right now - later this year. I'm going to clone my C: with OS, and has the registry associated with P3d. I'm going to move my new clone AND my dedicated Raptor with P3d over to the new box. Again, IF you're OS is slow, bloated, well, a fresh install is the way to go.
