The 4050N / 40N50 / 4050W / 40W50 / 4050S / 40S50 / 4050E / 40E50 type of waypoint is a 5 letter waypoint every bit as much in the navigation database as "RIVET" or "CYMON" or "SADDE" etc.

 

These waypoints happen to be located on a whole degree latitude/longditude reference. In the case of 4050N, this location is N40°00.0 W050°00.0 (here it is on google maps)
