Scenery Development

Recommended Posts

After travelling the depths of Alaska, Microsoft Flight is in desperate need of some new scenery. I have also realized that when coming to make new missions and challenges, it gets harder to find locations to set them .

The technique to create scenery in Flight is similar to FSX (according to stone) but its difficult to understand due to how Flight is archived. If anyone has any past experience on creating scenery in FSX or have any ideas on what to do (e.g scenery development method), please suggest them here.

These suggestions will be useful to the whole community and getting a discussion started will certainly get the development rolling. With some scenery, Flight could once again takeoff.

Its time to step up the Game. Literally!

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Thanks HiFlyer! I hope that someone does know about developing scenery, to keep this Simulator flying, but enthusiasm such as this, is what keeps the world of MSFlight going.

The structure of the scenery is a little different from FSX which is hard to understand and I'm having trouble figuring out how all the .dds files connect together!

The dds files are texture images for both scenery objects and aircraft. They are DXT formatt in a DDS wrapper - Wikipedia is your friend for a more comprehensive explanation.

They are not particularly important in the new scenery files since the texture formats have not changed since the previous version of FS.

For a more complete understanding of the various scenery elements, please see the FSX SDK documents. You can also consult some tutorials that I put together on various aspects of scenery design and that can be found in the Avsim library.

The challenge(s) for us now is to see what has changed since FSX from a technical standpoint and how we would go about creating new scenery.

Outside of converting FSX scenery to Flight format, if we are able to figure it out, re-creating the world of FS is a very long and pain-staking effort, so you should not expect any immediate gratification.

Best regards.

Luis
