New PC Problem

Featured Replies

Just ordered a new Dell today to replace my 7 month old Dell that I bought thinking that I was not going to get into MSFS again. Big mistake!!. So now I m getting a excellent processor and PCI express, fast ram, the whole 9 yards. Now the big quuestion, before the PC gets here next week , is how do I transfer my FS9 to the new machine. I have a bunch of payware addons, and aircraft, as well as scenery. I was at Best Buys today and saw a program called PC Relocater Ultra, and it claims that it will transfer the program over automatically. Does this sound like it would work, or do I have to reinstall everything one piece at a time ( hoping that I can remember where the pieces are and how many of them there are)

Bob; Before you invest in yet another program , you might want to checkthe file transfer util included with XP. Might do all you want:-) Denny

I wouldn't invest any money in PC Relocator Ultra... The biggest problem you have is some FS9 add-ons may be keyed to your specific machine. Change the machine, the add-ons may no longer work even if you restore every file and every registry key. I can't say what add-ons do this, but I know some may do.You are also going to be dealing with different hardware, and I really suggest a reinstall--yep, even one at a time. You want FS9 and your add-ons to recognize the new setup, vs. having to go in after the fact and hack config files, etc... Some add-ons even have features enabled based on your system specs--features you may not enjoy today but may be able to enjoy with a new system. -John

I agree with John. Unless you do a reinstall of everything from scratch there are going to be problems of all sorts. It will be far faster and less painful to just do it right the first time.Doug

PCI card ? :-(

PCI express, I read.Be well!Jaap Verduijn.

Bob if your old machine is still running you might try this. I have migrated C drives several times with Win2000 Pro. I am sure it will also work with XP as they both use the same ntldr.Install a pci ide controller card in the old machine and put your C drive on the card and make sure it boots ok. Then move the card to the new machine. You may have to go into the bios and check the boot sequence. The controller card may be listed as removable device or some other strange device. After it boots ok on the card install all your new motherboard drivers. Now you should be able to shut down and install the C drive on the internal IDE. Boot up and install all the other device drivers you need.Good LuckJohn
