February 14, 200521 yr I have some questions regarding the weather in fs9. First, i see alot of people recommending 'active sky' ? What are the advantages over basic fs9 weather ?And second, is it possible to get exact weather info from fs9 ? things like wind direction and knots for different levels i.e 100 nm from approach i would like to know what is the weather on the runway, is that possible ?
February 14, 200521 yr >What are the>advantages over basic fs9 weather ?>Active Sky is not 'basic' weather, it is real weather. So really your question should be what is the difference between real weather that comes with FS9 and Active Sky. AS gives you much better representation of current weather with vastly richer cloud layers, visibility changes, and other atmospheric effects.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2 Michael J.
February 14, 200521 yr Hi,Here you are:http://www.hifisim.com/activesky20045.htmHope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
February 14, 200521 yr After reading tons of recomandations I couldn't resist and baught Active Sky. WOW! My first experience was somewhere in Misty Alaska, and I did nothing but fire up and tell the program to go online, easy as that. No more sharp fog layer transitions and boring similar clouds all over the sky. It's also very easy to import a standard fs2004 flightplan to it to make sure the weather changes en route. IMHO
February 15, 200521 yr Author What is the hit to the MS9 frame rates with Active Sky? I have been tempted to purchase but with all my new addon scenery such as Misty Fjords, my frame rates are down, on average, to the 20-25 FPS.ThanksTom
February 15, 200521 yr it ovbiously eats some resources, otherwise it would not be possible to generate that kind og weather, but not as much as I anticipated :)
February 15, 200521 yr Hi Tom,The actual number of cloud layers and the different cloud types can affect a system. Some thunder-heads that rise 20,000 feet need to be drawn. However, we do have some great user options that can minimize the FPS hit. We also work with Chris at FSW to develop user friendly cloud sets.20 to 25 FPS is still a good range. We hope you will give us a shot!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
February 15, 200521 yr Author Jim,Thanks for the information. My concern is that clouds and AI are the two biggest hits on my system. I have a nasty habit of setting my sliders a little to far to the right. What pixel setting does AS recommend that you set your monitor display settings to (1.e 1024 by 768, 1280 by 768, or 1280 by 1024)? ThanksTom
February 15, 200521 yr Screen resolution is a very individual choice and really has nothing to do with AS. I personally like 1280x960.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2 Michael J.
February 15, 200521 yr Author MichaelI am in complete agreement with your statement that screen resolution is a individuals choice. But a higher screen resolution does impact your frame rates (depenant on the make-up of your system). I'm just looking for a recommended monitor pixel count. I am currently running my monitor at a 1280 by 1024 pixel count. If I can can get a good resolution from AS with a lower pixel setting I would adjust my settings.Tom
February 15, 200521 yr Tom,Sorry but I don't I follow. Sure higher resolution will tax your video card so you pick resolution which is a compromise between eye candy and what your system can realistically deliver. I just have no idea what AS has to do with it. It is like any other ad-on - it has some effect on performance and only you who own this system will be able to find the sweet spot.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2 Michael J.
February 15, 200521 yr Hi Tom,With the the huge number of monitor/video card combinations out there, we do not have a recommendation. We prefer to adjust other settings and leave that one alone. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen Damian or the team suggest a resolution change. There are other settings that impact FPS more.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
February 15, 200521 yr Author Michael/JimThank you for your inputs. I'm on travel the later part of this week. When I get back in town I will take a longer look at AS. Everything that I hear or read about the product is very positive. Thanks againTom
