I can't seem to be able to change the softkey from GPS to LOC for an approach on the MFD? Please clue me in.

The way Carenado has programmed it, you have to use both the OBS and CDI keys on the PFD..

 

If you want it to work the way the real G1000 does it (CDI key), send me a PM and I'll send you my modified G1000 for the 850.
