July 31, 201411 yr Commercial Member With P3Dv2.3 around the corner I decided to do some spring cleaning (well, summer cleaning), and prep also with a fresh install of my Windows 7 Ultimate 64. After 4 years figured it was time to clean out the cobwebs! So I have formated my new 256GB SSD just for the OS, performed the install of just the motherboard drivers so I have the LAN and such. Also made sure Win7 was activated - no problem. But when I try to use Windows Update I get a big red "X" and something to the effect the update services are not running. But I checked and they are. Even did a 2nd full format and install and have the same issue.I'm searching the web but thought I would see if anyone else has come across this in the past.Thx,Clutch Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!) August 8, 201411 yr Or this - Disconnect external HDD if one is connected Click Start-->type msconfig in search box, press Enter MSConfig – General Tab: click Selective Startup, Uncheck Load Startup Items Services Tab: click Hide all Microsoft Services, Click Disable All Click OK – prompt to restart system Click Restart to restart system After restart, run Windows Update again – should install updates ok After restart, type mysconfig in search box, press Entter On General Tab: Click Normal Startup, click OK, Restart – system restarts with all normal settings. I had this same problem on a brand new W7-64 system a couple of months ago, and these steps also worked. So far no update problems since.
