Pros and Cons of deleting FS9 config occasionally?

Featured Replies

Is it true that it's a GOOD idea to occasionally delete the FS9 config file? I've heard that for the minimal pain of re-assigning your joystick buttons, and re-doing your settings, that this is like a "cleansing" of the program.I've heard the same for human beings. It's good to donate BLOOD every so many weeks, and let your body replenish it. Scientists are now saying that this prevents many diseases and contributes to good heart health. (sorry for the "stretch" here)If it's good for humans to delete and replenish, it might be good for FS9 maintenance. What do you all think?

I see maybe two reasons of why you might want to do this:1. - You are experiencing some type of problem where you suspect the file is the culprit.2. - You have made several changes, such as hardware, that could effect the file. Example - I recently swapped out my 9700 graphics card for a All-in-wonder to use temporarily while being repaired. They sent me back a 9800 card which I installed. I then noticed I had three defferent sets of entries for all the cards. So in that case, a 'cleaning' was justified.I always make a backup of my fs9.cfg file so in case it gets corrupt. Or I can easily copy & paste sections if I am trying out different settings.

Yes....It's been in the NEWS lately. Seems giving blood is GOOD for you. Check it out on Google or someplace. If I find an article, I'll post it..but I read where it's good for you.Check out this site....especially about HEMOCHROMOTOSIS, which is too much IRON in the blood. Seems giving blood is excellent for removing some of this toxic IRON.http://www.donateblood.com.au/Donor/guide/...iving-blood.asp

Well the fs9.cfg file isn't a very "big" file. It basically just a normal textfile that tells FS what all your settings are in the options screens, and also contains a few "hidden" settings that can't be changed from those screens. It's not as "magic" as some people tend to believe. It's also rarely modified other than when you change something and this change doesn't leave any "holes", they just change the value of some variable in the file. You may want to purge it when installing a new videocard as you may be getting multiple videocard entries. This doesn't do any harm but it's always nice to have a tidy system.Things like the windows registry are completely different and more easily likened to giving blood. It's a huge database that more easily gets fragmented. I think giving blood may be healthy. So is occasional fasting. But it's more important to just live healthy, eat healthy etc. Be careful with your body, you're only given one :(

It is also good, if you own an aquarium (I have 2 soon to be 3), to drain out 10% or more of the water weekly and replace it with clean water. Helps keep the tank's overall health in check and helps remove toxins that build up over time (especially Nitrates). The question is, does this analogy apply to Flight Sim and the configuration file? I think that if you don't change your hardware much, then there is no reason to replace the file.

Thanks for all the viewpoints. I guess I won't delete it unless I change some hardware. I was under the impression that "addons" got cluttered and when "re-building" the FS9 config, you somehow put everything in order and made stutters and pauses less obvious.

I do it every time I update the video driver so as to not get multiple entries in there etc...

JimmiG, sorry but that's crap (the blood bit). Typical lifespan of the typical RBC is 120 days, and any suggestion that giving blood is physiologically "beneficial" is a joke.Spilok. Toxic iron? Haemochromatosis is not exactly common amongst the general populous. Agreed that in this (very small) sub-population of sufferers, Iron does indeed become toxic - but blood donation will not afford any relief from this condition beyond a month.Cheers,(Dr) Paulhttp://www.strontiumdog.plus.com/conc_capt_ba.jpgConcorde Training Captainwww.BAVirtual.co.uk

(you'd not fit in, in the 16th century then!) *grin* (the only time I'm _really_ against bloodletting is when it's mine in question! *grin*)

GIVING blood for the benefit of others, I'm all in favour, but the misconception that it is somehow beneficial to the donor (and when I say 'donor' I mean the otherwise healthly non-pathologic) is rubbish.Blood-letting? Quite right - it belongs half a millenia in the past when we didn't know better.Cheers,Paulhttp://www.strontiumdog.plus.com/conc_capt_ba.jpgConcorde Training Captainwww.BAVirtual.co.uk

Dr. Paul... I hear you. My Dad died 5 years ago from Liver disease at the age of 80. He never drank one drop of alcohol in his life. The Dr. at the hospital told me he had excess iron in his liver, and concluded hemochromotosis. He asked me and my sister to get checked. She was fine, but MY iron level was high. My doctor advised me to give blood regularly, and see if that makes a difference. It did, and my iron levels are normal now. I give blood regularly every 7 weeks or so, and have for 5 years. Not only does it make me feel good about the donation to those who may need it, but I truly believe that had my Dad done it, he may still be alive today. Of course, I'm not a doctor, and this could be anecdotal, but I feel that it works in the human body. We have a lot to learn about how the body works....I'm sure you'll agree.
