FSX buggy after thermal paste switch.

Recommended Posts

Hello again,

After having the thermal paste melted off of my CPU(resulting in a hideous overheating), I have replaced it with Arctic Silver and re installed correctly. But now FSX seems to be weird. My temps are down in the 50's while FSX is running, and with loads of 20-39%. That's nice, but it has been weird as well.

The sim overall lags, not FPS lag, but processing lag. While it now takes nearly 10 minutes for the sim to start (2 minutes before), loading flights take 3x longer (default Ultra Light at Friday Harbor takes 7 minutes as opposed to the 1 minute before), and when I am flying a flight, the sim has good frames, but freezes every 10 seconds as if it is going to crash, but then it fixes its self and is normal for another 10 seconds. note: I have deleted the .cfg file, load a new one, and use FSX Bajote  tool to tweak it, and this still happens.

This shouldn't be a hardware issue I do have many add-ons installed (none added after paste switch) and it was very fast before, but now it freezes. This is noticeable in FSX, Minecraft, Black OPS 2. and just general use.

If anyone knows what might of happened when I re-plugged the CPU back in, and maybe a fix, that would be great-

Thanks,

Dmitri.

This is with an i7 4790K @ 4.4GHz

Item to add, using CPUTemp, load on all of the cores are 1-10% when loading flights or changing things in flight (i.e. PMDG 737 panel state), and once it is set, loads go up to 30-59%

Have you tried re-seating the processor? I've heard that occasionally this fixes some issues. However, do be careful, wear an anti-static wrist band and be sure to constantly stay grounded whilst handling the CPU. Even a small discharge can destroy it.

I did re-seat it, (resulting in my monitors bugging out), but after re-seating everything it started up successfully.

If you indeed had a major overheating incident, it is very possible that your CPU has suffered permanent damage. If the CPU temp rises far above tjmax for even a few seconds, that would be all it takes. The symptoms you describe, affecting not only only FSX but also other games, all point in that direction.

Is there a way to assess that it is indeed CPU damage? Or could it be another hardware/software item that is causing this. Right now I'm running with the sim closed and all is okay. But when the sim is started, all goes down hill.

CPU load out of the sim are higher than in the sim, that is the problem it seems.

If you have indeed managed to melt the thermal paste then your CPU is broken.

Thermal paste just does not melt unless it gets very very hot, to get that hot will kill a cpu very quickly.

Yep, everyone here is correct. Based on what you have reported, you've hammered a significant number of transistors on you processor.  You likely CAN get it it work after a while, but at significantly reduced speed.

Time for a new processor, based on what you're reporting.

Okay, I'll look into a CPU re placement.

Is there a way to guarantee this is 100% a CPU problem? I don't want to decommission my computer if it isn't the processor completely causing this.
