Why does Night Time give a massive FPS hit?

Can you please explain why I get such a massive hit on FPS when flying at night? Then maybe I could look at finding a way to sorting it out.

 

I just assumed that textures are textures whether they show a bright part or dark part?

So why do I get anything upto a 70% hit on FPS?

It is worse over default scenery compared to my ORBX England.
