WideFS and Squak Box

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm thinking about getting WideFS so I can run Squak Box on my networked laptop when I'm on VATSIM. It seems this will be more convenient than switching tasks on the desktop. My questions are:Would WideFS use more processing power on the desktop than SB does (thus slowing framerates)?I currently use a key my desktop keyboard to key the mic on SB, could I still use the same key, or would I have to switch to a key on my laptop (since that's where SB would be running)? Thanks in advance...-Gary

Gary,It sounds like you are making the switch that I have recently made, and it has really made a difference in my simming experience. I will try and answer all of your questions.1. Yes, SB3 has a special install process for installing with WideFS, because it installs the models to the server (primary FS machine) and the squawkbox app to the client machine.2. I moved all third party applications to the client machine, and I definately improved overall game performance...by a fairly substantial amount. Mileage will vary based on system, but my experience was VERY positive.3. If you have a registered version of FSUIPC, there is documentation of how to setup a sort of 'pass-through' push to talk button...meaning you push a key on the desktop and the keystroke is sent to the client machine. I use a laptop as the client and hook my headphones and mic to it...this is a nice setup because I get sim sounds from the desktop speakers and ATC on only the headphone. My only caution is this (something I ran across last night actually). If you hop on for a quick flight on the primary machine (server) and don't connect to at least one client, I get very pronounced stuttering at about 30 second intervals. I believe this is due to the server actively searching for a client to connect to...if I connect the client machine, even without running any additional software, the stuttering goes away completely.Hope this helps!

I've also thought about doing this also, but I use headsets on my main machine with no speakers. Everything comes through the headsets, which for me is good. So is there a way to get the push to talk through the main machine to the client PC running the headsets on the main machine?? Does that make sense, or do I need more coffee.

Just to clear up one point, you need a registered version of FSUIPC to use Widefs so the key mapping for your PTT is taken care of.Read Pete's document and set up the PTT as for Roger Wilco, it works with AVC without any changes.Jeff,No idea why you experience stutters if you hop on for a short flight. I assume you mean an off line flight?I have used Widefs for a number of years and have not experienced stuttering caused FSUIPC or Widefs.Vollmey,I have no idea if your sound configuration will work but if you want sound through the main flight sim PC then there is no need to map your PTT to the other computer as AVC will have to be loaded onto the flight sim PC.Normal setup for Widefs is to have SB, AVC etc on the second PC and your headset (with mic) would be on the second PC and FS sounds would come through speakers on the FS PC.Hopefully someone will come along with a definitive answer for you.

Hey Vulcan,I ONLY encounter stutters if I don't have wideclient currently running on any satellite machines. It's like it is actively looking for a client and, subsequently, stutters when it looks. Maybe not other people's experience, but I one I have not had any problem living with. Thanks!
