June 6, 200520 yr In the song "I've been Everywhere" Johnny Cash. Winnemucca is the road he's travelling on when he gets a lift. It's also the title track of "Flight of the Phoenix (2005)". This was such an unually place I had to find out more. So first step - Find if the location actually exists. Yep it's in Nevada (not stated in the song?). From the websites I've been to it's been around since 1830 approx. Second step. Does it have an airport. Yep KWMC. From Aerial Photos and maps it's about 10-15 miles SSW of Winnemucca city center. I-80 goes right through it and there is also the UP (Union Pacific) and SP (Southern Pacific - Now UP) rail lines traveling through this city. It's the county seat for Humbolt County NV and has a colorfull past from an old west standpoint (Butch and Sundance robbed a bank in Winnemucca - they also made a clean get away).Third step. Is it in the FS9? Nope! This airport even has 2 helipads. So apparently Microsoft hasn't been there. Well they can't go everywhere. So I'm thinking of making it for FS9. The airport doesn't look all that complex and the area is pretty scenic from the aerial photos and maps I've seen. Any airport that has 2 helipads can't be bad. Oh it does have runways. It was one of those things you hear and want to find out about. It is sometimes so wonderfull being able to find places on the internet. If anyone is working on Nevada or if there is a file with this AFCAD any help would be appreciated. I did search the usual places looking for FS9 related Winnemucca files. Airliner.Net doesn't even have photos of the airport (most unfortunate). My quest for photos has just begun however. I live in Canada so going to NV would be a bit of stretch just for some pics. I'm going to keep looking however. It looks like such an interesting place. Just from a song. Go figure. I guess Hank Snow and then Johnny Cash had that in mind when they put that in there repitoir. I'm a pretty big fan of the movie aswell. Even though it's not in Nevada (it's a bit to populated for a plane to be missing for very long). I recently got to watch and tape the Original FOTP (Flight of the Phoenix). It was very simular to the remake. I had seen it some time ago but the details that were "Remade". Sometimes the remake take a bit of Artistic license when doing a movie redo. I know that both are based on the book so perhaps it's just that the book was the imputance of both and so they are nearly the same with different people and other miner details. For all the headaches it can create at times you just gotta love the internet..No doubt about it...Ronson2k
June 6, 200520 yr Author I landed my plane there once on a fuel stop to California in 1994 .It was memorable to me for 2 reasons:1) on final approach when just getting ready to flare after a leg from Rock Springs, Wy. a lawnmower truck pulled onto the runway on my landing spot, causing a sudden go around on my part and an apology from the Fbo operator over the unicom.2) It was one of my first flights with a fuel injected aircraft (bonanza) and no one had bothered to instruct me on how to hot start the engine. Took quite a while of cranks to finally get it started-was red in the face.It seems to appear correctly on my fs9?!http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/118790.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
June 6, 200520 yr Winnemucca (KWMC) is in FS9 -- at least my FS9. However the town center isn't--I guess the landclass source wasn't detailed enough to show it. I have a small landclass file I created with my program, Landclass Assistant, which adds the town. But the airport is there in the default scenery--you may want to clear your search filter in FS9So it looks like Microsoft was there--just didn't find a place to stay :)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/118796.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/118797.jpg
June 6, 200520 yr What I've heard, is that when someone asks, "Where can I buy an affordable home around San Francisco?" the answer is "Winnemucca"!scott s..
June 6, 200520 yr I first visited Winnemucca in 1970--sang there with a school Choir. Our hosts in the local community, when asked what Winnemucca was all about, always replied with "In Winnemucca, you Win Amok!" Never gambled there, so I wouldn't know if it were true or not... -John
June 6, 200520 yr It looks like I was wrong about it not being in there. I was using a database of North American Airports to do a quick search of FS9 airports. I'm glad it's in there. The first photo shows a more detailed version based on the photo's I've seen of the airport. I'm hoping that is what I see when going to the airport later. I looked for afcads for the airport but no luck. Even under Nevada airports. I did d/l the landclass for northern Nevada so that could be cool. What a story. Ground control isn't that important I guess. I gotta think the truck driver was in trouble after that. If he went were he wasn't supposed to be. It was the song that started me out on this trek if you will for info on Winnemucca. I didn't even think it was a real place at first. It seemed like a nice piece of fiction to me. Looking into it further it seems like such a cool (most likely hot) place to visit. From the photos it seems nicely placed in between two mountains with a fair number of lakes in the area. Perhaps even a floatplane base. That was something I hadn't thought of either.I can't find any photo's of the airport online. It's pretty weird that way. Usually there is plenty of most all airports. This one seems to have so much going for it that there should be some photo's of the place. I can sat images but as good as they are you don't get any of the structures and infostructure. Looking forward to going there in the sim later this evening. No doubt about it...Ronson2k
June 6, 200520 yr Hi All; Well like the song says "I've been everywhere", or pretty close to it.That's one of the fringe benefits of being a professional tourist:-lol Glad to see someone actualy remembers Hank Snow, I liked his versionbetter than Johnnys. The last time I was there was probably about 2 years ago and Iremember a little "Mom and Pop" 24hr Cafe with truck parking. Theplace was pretty scroungy looking, but the help was friendly andthe food was good. I've eaten in thousands of 'em over the past 40years and they haven't killed me yet. :-badteeth "He said..Have you ever seen a road like this, with so much dust and sand? And I said..Listen man...I've traveled every road in this here land" DennyGreetings From San Antone' Denny Retired Professional Tourist
June 7, 200520 yr Author My setup has fsgenesis landclass, mesh, and I am using usa roads-probably why it looks so good! :-)One of the things I remember was it is one of the few airports between Salt Lake/Wendover and California that had fuel. You find some of the airports out in that area have runways (sometimes not even much of that) but no fuel. Makes strong headwinds interesting when trying to go from point a to b.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
