faulty logbook

Featured Replies

I need help from someone who understands computers and FS9 far better than I do. I have been simming for years and have several thousand hours under my belt. As far as the actual fying goes, I have no problem at all. My problem is that FS9 will no longer allow me to log flights other than manually after every flight. Of course it used to be, that when I would exit, the logbook would open, I would enter the departure airport and the place I ended up, FS9 would enter the time, day and night and log the flight. Now I have to go to options before exiting, open logbook and enter everything manually, including the time. To add insult to injury, now frequently upon exit, FS9 will not save the previous flight. This has all taken place over a period of several months. I assume that some third party software or some freeware has caused the problem. I have uninstalled FS9 and reinstalled it several times both with and without saving my settings (and logged flights) -- to no avail. Since I spend about $20 or $30 a month on aircraft anyway I even bought a new copy of FS9, thinking maybe that would resolve the issue. No such luck.I'm sure that if I were a computer guru like many who use these boards I could solve this problem quickly, but unfortunatly, like many others, I am not.I would appreciate help from anyone willing to give it.Thanks,Richard

Hi Richard,I have had this happen too, and it appears to be something that happens when you manually edit a log entry from within the sim. I'm not sure why it happens, a glitch in the sim I presume.I'll assume you're running Win XP, file locations will be different if not.First go into your "...Documents and Settings(Your Name)My DocumentsFlight Simulator Files" folder and find your logbook file. It will be a text file with a .LOG extension, i.e.: "Richard.LOG", depending on the name you assigned to your log book in the sim. Copy down the filename exactly (right click the file > "Rename" > right click in the highlighted filename > "Copy" > ESC).Next, you need to open your fs9.cfg in Notepad:fs9,cfg is located in "...Documents and Settings(Your name)Application DataMicrosoftFS9. This is a hidden folder by default, so you'll need to go into "Control Panel > Folder Options", then click on the "View" tab and put a dot in "Show hidden files and folders" before you can see it. Alternatively, you can do a file search in "Documents and Settings(Your Name)" for "fs9.cfg".Double click the file, chose "Select a program from a list" and then scroll through the list until you find "Notepad". With the file open in Notepad, use the "Edit > Find" function of Notepad to search for "LOG_". First it should find "LOG_TIME=1", make sure it is "1" as opposed to "0". Below that line you should see "LOG_FILE=LOGBOOK". Here is where the problem lies, for some reason the sim changes this line when you edit a log entry from within the sim. Paste the filename of your logbook file over top of the word "LOGBOOK" and backspace the .LOG extension off. It should look like "LOG_FILE=Richard" when you're finished. Save and close fs9.cfg and your logbook should work normally again. From now on, view and edit your logbook by double clicking the log file from within your "Flight Simulator Files" folder rather than from within the sim and your logbook will continue to work normally.Good luck,Jim

Jim, thanks a million for your help. I tried it and finally got it done. It didn't work but that may be because I was back to the "Standard Pilot Log" Having deleted my other logbook previously. Maybe now that I know how to manipulate the file I can add a new logbook with my name on it and go from there. All the file was, was "LOG_FILE= and about 300 zeros." I changed it to "LOG_FILE=STANDARD PILOT LOG" but there was no change in the problem, I still have to log manually. But thanks anyway. BTW, I got a kick out of your website. (I'm an old wyoming boy.)Thanks again.Richard

Well, let's see what happens if you change it to "Log_File=Richard", and then go into your Flight Simulator files and create a new text document, giving it the filename "Richard.LOG". Also, make sure "LOG_TIME=1" is in the fs9.cfg. Might work?Failing that, you can simply delete your fs9.cfg and the sim will build a new one next time you start it. Be warned though that all of your settings will be deleted too and you'll have to go back in and set up your joystick assignments, enable your logbook, re-set your display settings, your default flight, etc. Basically it will be just like a brand new installation again, except you won't loose any of your add-ons. It's a bit of a pain in the a$$, but it usually fixes problems like you're having. You'll even get to see John & Martha again on the introduction page when the sim starts :) .Glad you liked the website :)Jim

Jim, Thanks , I will try all of that.Richard
