CAB files

Featured Replies

I've noticed more and more panel files now use CAB files. I'm unsure of how to use them -- just place the CAB files in the Gauges file, or extract the contents and then place them in the gauge file. I've searched several FS web sites for an answer without sucess. Thanks.

You can either place the intact .cab file in the main gauges folder, or they will also work just fine in the aircraft's panel folder, the advantage here being that when you decide to uninstall an aircraft, you remove all traces of it by deleting the acft's folder. Otherwise the gauges are generally left behind in the main gauges folder.Don't extract them, the sim automatically extracts them to RAM when you load the aircraft. If you extract them, the sim won't be able to find them because it looks for the .cab. file first, and then the individual gauge within.Jim

Jim, You're right on most points except the extraction part. The files can be extracted as long as all folders and sub folders ( if used,, IE bitmap folders ) are also extracted using the same names / structure. The best feature of having the folder structure is if you're a designer or doing some tweaking you donot have to re-cab it after every change. See http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...=7235&mode=full for more on the .XML structure. Regards,Roman

Yes, you could extract the .cab files, providing you used the correct folder name. i.e. you could extract "Boeing747-400.cab" to a subfolder of either "b747_400panel" or your main gauges folder named "Boeing747-400", or you could simply extract them directly into your "b747_400panel" folder and then open your panel.cfg and backspace every occurance of "Boeing747-400!" off of the individual gauge references. There are a number of ways to do it if you understand how it works, but the OP obviously didn't, so what would be the point of complicating my reply with a bunch of mumbo-jumbo about extracting .cab files when all he wanted to know was what to do with them to get his panel working.Just because I didn't mention every possible working combination I could think of, doesn't necessarily mean I'm wrong.Jim

Jim, My apologies.. You and I are both right... Except I was concentrating on your reply more than the original post.Barney 1026 should read yours and disregard mine unless he/she is trying to toy with them..No hard feelings.. Regards,Roman
