Auto Pilot Landing Help

Featured Replies

Hi, Can someone help me out and explain how to preform a autopilot landing, any help will be greatly appericated

getting a decent flightdeck like a Phoenix / PMDG / LevelD aircraft would be a good start.

I get established on the localizer as soon as possible, I insure that I am below the glide slope, then enable Approach Hold and I fly level until I intercept the glide slope. Once the glide slope is captured and I begin to descend, I reduce power, extend the gear and use flaps as necessary as my speed decreases. My goal is to be set up for landing about 300' AGL. Then I turn off the autopilot and hand fly the landing. R-

Ronhow do you do a visual approach when you can see the airport but cant see the runway threshold until about 1 DME out?it always the case with me, i cant see the runway till way to late and i have to make violent adjustments to allign with the runway. i do you VOR nav as well, still no good.

I guess so otherwise you would get vectors to line you up with the runway. But if you do fly VFR, do not aim for the runway straight on! You should never do that! Fly towards the airport and enter the circuit (you know, the circuit with 'downwind', 'base leg', those terms: if you do not know there terms mean, look at the FS tutorials). As soon as you've entered the circuit you will get a better view on where you are and where the runway is: this situational awareness is very important! This way you will not have any problem getting a good approach. So fly to the airport at a descent height (1500 ft or so) until you see the runway, line your plane up with the runway the way you're supposes to and then fly a 'circuit-shaped circle' in which you descent.

no i dont fly VFR i fly big jets like the 737 PMDG and the situation above i am in all the time, don't know if this is just a Fs2004 quirk.

Ahhhh like i can do approch hold but it never seems to be dead on and i have to control the alitude, is there a way of setting it down itself

"Ahhhh like i can do approch hold but it never seems to be dead on and i have to control the alitude,..."Follow these steps:1. insure that you are below the glideslope (the horizontal needle is above the center line),2. enable Heading Hold, Altitude Hold, and Approach Hold3. let the localizer (Vertical needle) capture first, Heading Hold light will extinguish and your plane will turn to line itself up with the ruway, 4. let the plane fly level until you interceppt the glide slope (horizontal needle drops to the center line),5. Altitude Hold will extinguish and the plane will descend."is there a way of setting it down itself"Look in the AVSIM library for the autoland program authored by John Cillas. It works well. R-

Yes, John's Autoland program is excellent. It's not a pushbutton 'land me' program, you must load the destination airport's elevation into the Autoland program and then make a good approach. If you do this properly, it will make the kind of landings we wish we could do as well ourselves.'Autopilot' landings can be done also, but you will usually land 'nosewheel' first, which is a no-no. Get John's program, you'll like it.Cheers,Bob

>don't know if this is just a Fs2004 quirk.Hanger the heavy, and learn to fly the low and slow C172 or C182 first. You're trying to drive Formula 1 racing cars and haven't learned to ride the tricycle yet... ;)Take the flight lessons in MS, and learn to do it (sort of) right! ;)
