319 kts below 100

I do remember this being brought up a couple of times in the Middle East when I was flying KC10s. After a while it became the norm to descend bellow 10,000 at descent speed(320). Every controller would say NO RESTRICTION BELOW 10,000, I felt it was their way of telling you to keep the speed up. There were a few guys who complained that we should not comply because we were under military rules that follow FAA guidance. A big argument started about staying above 250 while descending below 10,000. This is what happens when you deploy a bunch of type A pilots to the Middle East with nothing else better to do. My opinion was that host nation rules trump FAA, and i will comply.

The fun part was returning to the "DA DIRTY DEID" after a sortie. We had a competition going on how long you could stay at cruise before descending and making the airbase. You would have to snap a picture of your instrument panel for proof and you couldn't result in a go around. You would get so good that you could descend at 320 through 10,000ft, pitch to slow, fly the overhead or straight in, configure and land without ever bringing the throttles out of idle from descent. It was basically a space shuttle approach. If you used speed brakes or did the overhead, you were ridiculed. If not on the schedule, we would gather at ops to watch the show.

I miss those days, it definitely gave you the opportunity to learn the capabilities of the jet.
