I am looking for a good TAWS gauge, preferably freeware, so I don't keep crashing into mountains. Thanks for any recommendations.

Not aware of any freeware, but you could take a look at the dbs studio payware:

Product activation basically is a nightmare, but it's a rather inexpensive addon gauge. No fps impact on my system. An occasional issue with the moving map may require you to switch range back and forth in order to "reset" the gauge.
