Ultimate Terrain-American Data-Telephone Pole Question

Featured Replies

I have noticed some posts which indicate with the addition of Ultimate Terrain USA, utilities have been able to be retained from American Data. My assumption is that this means whatever is included when only telephone poles are checked (In American Data). So far, I have not seen the poles, signs, etc. show up anywhere. American Data Utilities are enabled in my scenery library (above Ultimate Terrain). Any input or clarification on this from anybody? Thanks:RTH

How do they compare to what you had before UT? There had been some talk of the utilities on the FSGenesis forum after American Data came out, and what I took away from all of it is the utilities data was not that impressive and there is not a whole lot to see over default. Tony

True.Previously, all I used from American Data were the streams and telephone poles as I preferred the USA roads. Streams were a slight improvement over defaults but only the small ones were included anyway. To me personally, this was somewhat academic as my home airport is located in West Virginia. Richard Hill has done an outstanding job of reworking all of the waterways in WV (large and small) as freeware. For this area, his contribution exceeds or is equal to anything else I have seen anywhere. The only thing left worthy of consideration from AD in my opinion are the telephone poles, and if I am interpreting correctly possibly a few road signs are included. At any degree of altitude, this also becomes somewhat academic unless one want to just taxi all over the place. As near as I can tell, USA Roads and the UT Roads pretty nearly duplicate each other - six of one and a half-dozen of the other. I am presently useing UT and am very happy with it.I thought maybe the AD poles could be retained, but doubt that they line up with UT road placements anyway. I thought I would take a peek at least. So far, I have either overlooked them or have not been able to get them to display after installing UT. No Biggie! Thanks for the reply:RTH

Do the default FS2004 utilities at least show up with UT:USA ?

I have some utilities showing up. As I thought I had disabled Amercian Data and I don't think UT has utilities, I think it must be the defaults. I know some users went back to the default as it in some places was better than the American Data.Tony

I use the power lines from American Data and they work quite nicely. It's important to note that these are NOT telephone poles that follow roads, but power transmission lines the criss-cross the countryside. In my area they are very accurate. In the American Data configuration screen, if you check the "Cut Area" box, then the powerlines will be cleared of vegetation, etc., as they are in real life. They make another useful VFR navigation tool. Oh, and I am using Ultimate Terrain also.Jim

Ultimate Terrain does not include power lines - so you can use the default ones or I assume the American Data ones with UT. For more info you can post in the Ultimate Terrain forum at http://www.simforums.com

Thanks Jim:You named my problem. I was mistaken as to what originated Poles "that follow roads" including road signs if one looked closely enough. I did a bit of backtracking and they are included when the AD roads are selected, NOT Powerlines. I knew that I had seen them somewhere. So much for that idea as I much prefer the UT or USA roads personally.I still don't know if my AD Power lines are showing up. I have not noticed them anywhere. I'll dig out a sectional so that I can isolate a powerline location, or If you don't mind, can you specify coordinates where you are seeing those that you like "in your area".One addition note: In answer to someone else's question, The default utilities (i.e. Poles)do not show up (for me) after UT is installed. My assumption is that they also were included with the roads when the defaults were activated. They are not worth it IMHO in comparison with the advantages of UT.Thanks again and happy flying:RTH

In FS9.cfg - check TERRAIN_SHOW_VECTOR_OBJECTS = 1 - this has been the culprit for many of FREEflow Florida users not seeing autogen bridges, I suspect the same for your poles!Best,sgEDIT> This might not be what you're asking, but I thought I'd interject anyhow...

Jim:Old blind Tom finally picked out the powerlines from AD.Thanks:RTH

You can also enable the American Data railroad bridges and they line up quite well with the Ultimate Terrain railroads. Jim

Is it TERRAIN_SHOW_VECTOR_OBJECTS = 1 or TERRAIN_USE_VECTOR_OBJECTS = 1? I see TERRAIN_USE_VECTOR_OBJECTS = 1 in my .cfg file, but not TERRAIN_SHOW_VECTOR_OBJECTS = 1. What section does it go in?Thanks,Thomas

My bad. TERRAIN_USE_VECTOR_OBJECTS = 1 under the [Graphics] section.
