Microstutter when loading Scenery or AI Traffic Textures

Featured Replies

I use LAGO FSE 2004 to add scenery to my bare airstrips and I find when I first pan to these scenery objects or when they first come into view, there is a small pause in FS9 operation while the textures load. This also happens with some of my AI traffic. This leads me to believe that it involves certain types of textures loading onto the onboard graphics card memory (256).It's a problem I can live with, but with my system (see below) it seems like I could somehow get the textures to load faster. If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I've used LAGO objects before with no lag in loading, so I'm frankly not sure what has changed. Thanks!Paul (Odaat on FSEconomy)Hardware========Dell XPS Gen 43.20 GHz Intel Pentium 4Board: Dell Inc. 0U7084 Bus Clock: 800 megahertz1 Gig DDR2 SDRAM80 Gig SATA HD (NTFS Format)ATI Radeon X850XT PE 256 (Catalyst 5.6)Logitech Extreme3D Pro Joystick2/19" CRT MonitorsApplications Used with FS9.1============================Windows XP Pro SP2 (build 2600)FS9.1 no CD (FS9 registered copy!)FSAutoStartAS 2004.5Ultimate Terrain USA/Canada/AlaskaUltimate TrafficAISmoothFSEconomyGraphics Card Direct3D Settings===============================AA 4XAF 8XMipMap - QualityTexture Preference - QualityVertical Sync - Always OnSupport DXT Textures - OnFS9.1 Settings==============Terrain mesh complexity - 80Terrain texture size - HighTerrain detail - Land OnlyWater effects - NoneDawn/dusk texture blending - CheckedExtended terrain textures - UncheckedSpecial effects detail - MediumScenery complexity - DenseAutogen density - NormalAll-on dynamic scenery - checked (for Emma Field) - NormalGround scenery casts shadows - not checkedSun glare -checkedLens flare - checkedGlobal aircraft quality - Medium LowVirtual cockpit gauge quality - HighReflections - not checkedAircraft cast shadows - checkedLanding lights - checkedGlobal weather quality - Medium HighSight distance - 60 milesCloud draw distance - 40 miles3-D cloud percentage - 30Detailed clouds - checkedCloud coverage density - MediumDevice Name - RADEON x859 XT Platinum Edition.0Target frame rate - 20Resolution - 1600 x 1200 x 32 Render to texture - checked (for DXT cloud package)Transform and lighting - checkedAnti-aliasing - not checkedFiltering - BilinearMIP mapping quality - 4Hardware-rendered lights - 3Global max texture size - MediumFrom FS9.CFG============TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=200[DISPLAY.Device.RADEON X850 XT Platinum Edition.0]Mode=1600x1200x32PanelAsTexture=0[DISPLAY]UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=20TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=200[TERRAIN]TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=80.000000TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=2TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=0TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=7.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=15.000000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=1[sCENERY]IMAGE_COMPLEXITY=3DYNAMIC_SCENERY=1DYN_SCN_DENSITY=2DAWN_DUSK_SMOOTHING=1SUNGLARE=1LENSFLARE=1

>Global max texture size - MediumThat is the problem. What you are experiencing is a strange phenomenon that very high end machines will exhibit no matter what you do. The *ONLY* way that completely eliminates the ocasional microstutters is lowering Global max texture size to Small or Very Small. Try it. do some turns, and you'll be amazed. Not a single microstutter, smooth as silk.

I could write a book about trouble shooting stutters but lowering my mip maps has helped more than anything. That and lowering ai traffic and auto gen. Even on my monster rig with gobbs of ram, I still get them especially on short final during my flare. This is flying the heavies,PMDG,Level D ect. I get none at all on other planes so I feels its a direct result of the cpu getting hammering with a quick load of graphic info.

Unfortunately there is a tradeoff between custom object and stutter. Therefore I shy away from add-ons that add detail to many airports at once.
