July 19, 200520 yr Hello!I have tried just about everything to find out why my FS9 keeps crashing to desktop and, of course not found the answer.I checked all my installations, which appear to be OK.No mysterious files, cfg-files OK, etc. and it still keeps crshingto desktop.I have and ATI X800 Radeon (very good), but maybe some setting may be wrong in the control panel; fast write, etc....Again, I would be very grateful for any help to resolve the problems.I use Windows XP Home Edition (which seems OK)Earlier I used Windows 2000, which worked fine with FS9.Maybe XP is not very good with FS9?Landclass files disturb? I had FlightScenery Rhode Island installed, but it kept crashing almost immediately when I used it.So, grateful for any help......again.Thanks!Hans HermanssonSweden
July 19, 200520 yr I suffered from CTD's lately and today morning I for the first time did a trick: I moved fs9.cfg to another folder and let the sim build a new one. It made difference.. over 2 hours of flying in bad weather and no ctd! Of course you have to adjust the settings again, but that's the smaller harm..Petteri PulkkinenFinland
July 19, 200520 yr Hans, you didn't indicate your other system specs which could be helpful if Petteri's suggestion doesn't solve the problem. One thing that you did mention was the issue of Fastwrites ( SmartGart in ATI-speak); many people have found that enabling SmartGart results in system instability ( mine will crash if it is enabled) at very little improvement ( if any) in system performance. If you have SmartGart enabled, I would suggest disabling it as a next step. After that, I would look at system temperatures, Power Supply, that sort of thing.Hope that's of some use to you.Best Regards,Ed GreenKCLThttp://www.panelshop.com/DEV.jpg
July 19, 200520 yr Hi Ed!and thanks for your tips.I have SmartGART installed, and I thought it would be good, but, still, maybe not.Yes, fastwrites, too.How do I disable it? Just uninstall?Grateful for further help.........Thanks again!Hans/Sweden
July 19, 200520 yr Don't worry about Windows XP. FS9 should work great with it.You might try the freeware program "FlightSim Manager", which I believe can be found in the AVSIM library. It can search for some scenery conflicts, including landclass.AFCADS are another known problem. You might checkout the AFCAD scan program, which I think can be found over at www.ProjectAI.com. It can search for duplicates. You might try removing any recent AFCADS you have added. You did not indicate when your problems began. Was it when you installed Windows XP? After a hardware or software upgrade? Did it start having problems after you installed an add-on?Tony

All you need to do is to open the ATI Catalyst Control Center, scroll down to the SmartGart tab, open that tab and you will see the option to turn SmartGart OFF ( ATI sets it at ON by default for some reason unknown to me). You will have to reboot the computer in order for the setting to take effect, but after the re-boot, fastwrites ( which is what SmartGart is just another name for) should be OFF. Please post back what happens as I would be interested if this solves the problem.Best Regards,Ed GreenKCLThttp://www.panelshop.com/DEV.jpg
July 19, 200520 yr Hi again Ed (in Charlotte NC?)and thanks again for your advice.I checked my BIOS configuration, too today and found that I hadset my system to "maximum performance"; ie overclocking.Probably not so good; I switched back to default, of courseand since then, no crash! Knock on wood!I will certainly follow your advice. Thanks again!I feel I have found a new flightsimming friend in you.I would like to know more about you (which could be E-mailed in private; [email protected])My FS9 gives me maximum pleasure every day; I have tons of addons(the best) millions of aircraft; very many for AI, so I never get bored.I just tested my system now flying AI planes (using MRAI's Traffic View Board) between KOQU Quonset State and KPVD Providence usingFlightScenery's wonderful Rhode Island scenery. One little flight among the millions possible..................Thanks again!
July 19, 200520 yr Author afcads could very well be the problem especially if you have duplicates. and fwiw, there are several freeware flight sim manager programs. I'd do a search here or flightsim, looking for one that includes scenery management. There is one I use,and of course can not think of its exact name (I'm at work), but it also includes a ram optimzer. it is not ken salter's FS start program...which is a very goo dprogram in its own right.Sherm
