FSX Works... But crashes!

Featured Replies

Hey guys, been having issues with my FSX install since a couple of weeks...

From a working point where everything was fine, I seem to have ran into the following issue:

If I start up the sim, I can use it completely. Load up a flight, go wherever I want use the plane I want, etc. it all works fine, no issues, no crashes, nothing.

The problem appears if I want to switch to another app. Whatever it is (for example the other day I wanted to look at a screenshot I was sent with coordinates to go to the exact place for comparisson shots, and when hitting ALT-TAB to go to explorer, FSX crashed...). No error message is given. This behaviour repeats. Start it up and use it works great, but if I want to ALT-TAB to something else, it crashes...

Checked the CTD guide but can't find a solution even though I tired several of the checks it recommends

This is the Steam Edition by the eay.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

back in the day i had lots of problems with that in FSX so i started using windowed mode.

i would have thought they had solved those issues with the steam version but guess not. i haven't tried steam version with fullscreen..i got so used to using windowed that i use it all the time anyway so i can't comment as to if it's reproducable on my system. maybe you could try 'alt+numpad enter' instead of alt+tab to swap to windowed mode and see if that lets you hop back and forth with more stability. possibly consider the other usual culprits (is it an up-to-date videocard driver? or maybe try an older one if it is..?) does it happen even if you try it immediately after loading a fresh flight or just after it's been flying for a while?

good luck

On page 1 of the AVSIM CTD Guide there is a link to the AppCrashView app. Download and run it and then post the results here. If no results then look at page 2 and look at the Event Viewer and post the results here.

I agree with Andy (spesimen) though. If you hit Alt-Enter it will change from Windowed to Full Screen and vice-versa. In Windowed mode you can do use Windows or check other apps, etc. There is a known bug with using Alt-Tab.

Tried your suggestions but no dice... hitting alt-enter to go to window mode does it, but then it doesn't respond, I lose it (like if it had been minimized), does not come back and after a while I get the crash window again (no message other than fatal error blah blah..).

For the record, it happens even if I switch as soon as a flight loads up. :(

Best regards,

Hi Jim, I will try your suggestions starting from the appcrashview, etc.

For the record, Alt/Enter also kills it for me :(

EDIT: I take some of that back... Playing around with the ALT+ENTER on the num pad does let me switch to windowes and click on another and pausea it, etc. and for the most part works but sometime it minimizes it, and does freeze as well....

Wish it was simpler, don't know why it's happening as I didn't have this bug before :(

Will follow the suggestion of the guide.

If you are getting freezes with Alt-Enter, then your settings are too high.  If you tried Alt-Tab before doing an Alt-Enter, it is too late. FSX will freeze up on you.  It's something that might have been fixed if the FSX development had continued.

Best regards,

Thanks again. I would *almost* accept this 100% if I hadn't *NOT* had this issue initially... I mean, I can understand a bug, but why was it working fine at the beginning?

Also, want to hear something funny? Decided to try DX10 just for kicks. No issues using ALT-TAB there... :o
