Air traffic controller using Text only

Featured Replies

I consider to become a Vatsim controller but before doing so I wish to ask questions:

I noticed that the voice qualities are poor and sometimes impossible to understand...therefore I wonder if a controller can

use text messages only, rather then voice.

The code of conduct specifies that pilots must be prepared to accept text only ATC (B.4) and that ATC must be prepared to accept text only pilots (C.8).  That to me suggests it's not a formal Vatsim wide requirement to use voice, but it would be up to your local Vatsim division to decide whether they would go to the effort of training you, given that would normally be via voice.

The only way you are going to get a solid answer is to speak to the division you want to qualify with.

As far as I'm aware, nobody can refuse you from offering text only service. Just like nobody can force the pilots to use voice.

Try telling that to an ATC that ignores text and having to .wallop for a supervisor to help me

Edit: now you've gotten me into the va that you are in

I experienced text-only ATC on Vatsim occasionally. It is certainly not the normal situation, but definitely acceptable. And the controller was as professional as the others :)
