August 22, 200520 yr Hi all, anyone knows of an add-on featuring the Bendix King KLN-89B gps system? i want to get used to it without having to sit in the real airplane ..thanx!
August 22, 200520 yr Will the 90B do you?http://www.fs2x.com/Otherwise, there are versions of it as freeware which lack one or two facets of the real thing but are close enough. August 22, 200520 yr If the KLN90 works for you, check out aeroworx B200. You get the unit plus one of the best addon aircraft ever made.Fimflyer sells KLN 89 unit in package. I didn't like it but it's better than nothing.Jason Zhang JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
August 23, 200520 yr Author The real KLN 89 series GPSs aren't all that great either. I can't believe our flight school put the only Garmin 430 Com/Nav/GPS we have into the SIMULATOR! So when I fly in reality it's the lovely orange pixelated KLN-89, but when I'm in the sim I get the nice GPS. :-lol----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have. August 26, 200520 yr thanx for all the replies ...guess i should have looked at my aeroworx kingair a bit better .. ;-)in what way are the 89B and the 90 different?? or is it just a newer version??
August 26, 200520 yr This is an excellent question. Obviously Garmin offer much more in simulated GPS products than Bendix-King do (just going to the Garmin site is obvious), and of course Rxp have done wonders using some of that Garmin support in their products for FS.Our flight club has the KLN94 in all the C172's, which I believe is the standard now offered by Cessna. Prior to the '94 we did have the KLN-89B's fitted, although I think that we have changed almost all the older models out for the '94s now (and also incorporated the MFD in addition- much better than looking at that little GPS map on the NAV-4 page).I think we all use FS in some form to learn about real flight, and regarding IFR training and flight it's really great. Until you use a real life plane that has a KLN model such as the standard C172 S/R, and file instrument with a "/Golf" designation. Then you offer ATC the option of directing you to any fix, and here you are trying to figure out how to use the GPS and insert a waypoint, or use the "direct-to" function then revert back to the flight plan later. Even on a VMC day, this is no time to start learning about how to operate the GPS unless you really want to p*ss the controller off. And in the absence of something in the form of an FS add-on, a training tool from BK or a "take-home" cradle with a removable unit, the only other way is to pay close to $100 an hour to intuitively learn the unit.Bruce.
