November 2, 201510 yr Have you checked the database to assure yourself that the particular approach is included in the GPS navdata ? Not all are. In any case the issue is with the GTN `talking` to the other instruments so may simply be an issue for Flight 1 to resolve.
November 2, 201510 yr Commercial Member KDYL doesn't have any approaches with vertical guidance in trainer version 5.13 (or on Airnav that I can tell), try RNAV 10R Z GPS LPV at KMRY.
November 2, 201510 yr Author Jim, that very well is the issue then. So it is limited to the Garmin trainer even though Garmin updates their (real) data bases on a monthly basis? How far out of date is the trainer? I can assure you that in the real world, KDYL has RNAV approaches to 5 and 23 (LNAV+V) approaches. I fly them all the time. thanks for all your help!
November 2, 201510 yr Commercial Member If you've got a GTN in you're Maule I assume you're paying the subscription for the latest navdata, my understanding is it can be used to update the trainer data as well but I'm afraid I couldn't tell you how to do it. I think you need an SD card reader and then you copy some files from the SD card into the C:\ProgramData\Garmin folder. The current trainer DB is APR 2015. I think it explains how to update the trainer's database from your real world SD card somewhere in the main manual.
November 2, 201510 yr Author For what it is worth, LNAV + V approaches are not real vertical guidance, it is referred to advisory guidance and is proprietary to the maker of the NAV. It is generated via an algorithm in the NAV. It is supposed to help the pilot with the step down procedure shown in the profile view. I can guarantee you though, if you keep the cross hairs centered it is as good as any precision approach and I would bet my life on it.
