Return to FS

I'm planning on installing FSX:SE, and would like some feedback about add-ons and/or tweaks, if necessary.

I posted in PMDG since I'm wanting my MD-11 back (had FS9 version) but wanted some ideas on smaller but faster aircraft. I used to love the Flight 1 A36 for example. It flew high and fast. I also enjoyed the RXP GPS. Unfortunately it seems that the RXP gauges are a no-go in FSX:SE so I need to look at other aircraft.

I've been away for 9 years. I'm rebuilding from scratch. Only non aircraft I care about are Flight Environment, ground environment (or similar) and weather engine add on (Active Sky).

What aircraft are good, stable and on par with the old Flight 1 private aircraft? Also, how good is the Magestic Dash 8? I want a replacement for the ATR commuter that appears to not work in Steam.

Thank you :-)

- Chris

To start- Get the FTX Global texture pack from ORBX.

The MD-11 is not officially supported in FSX:SE.  The PMDG 777 is a phenomenal "modern" heavy.  It isn't the MD-11 but you may like it.  By every measure it is the best heavy available for FSX at the moment.  If your PC is also FS9-era, you probably won't be able to run it though.

The Majestic Q400 remains one of the best aircraft addons on the market.  If you want a regional turboprop, go for it.  It is very easy on FPS compared to other similarly featured aircraft.

The best (way better than FS9-era Flight1 planes...) GA planes available right now are the recent A2A offerings such as the 182 and Comanche, as well as the RealAir v2 Dukes and Lancair.  I'd say the A2A planes are generally better performing frame-rate wise, though they still require a bit of horsepower to run smoothly.

The Flight1 GTN 750 is a good investment if you enjoyed the RXP GPSes.

Thanks for the reply. :-)

My system is new. I built it right before summer, and it's flight sim ready. SSD, 4790 processor, 970 video card, et cetera. Running Windows 7 64-bit.

I've been informed on PMDG's forum that the MD-11, albeit not officially SE compatible, works perfectly fine. Are you aware of an issue? They say that you just point the installer to the right path and the plane works fine. Just need all simconnects installed.

Why FTX over GEX? I looked and it seemed to be personal preference only. I only fly US flights. Is there a performance difference between them really?

I'll look at the GAs and GTN you mentioned. Thanks.
