I was going to change my Display name in the forums. The instructions say that "This is the display name you wish to now use. Characters not permitted: [ ] | , ; $".

 

However, after I input my new display name (Luis Hernández), I get a message saying that "The name can only contain these characters: a-zA-Z0-9 _". I don't want to drop the accent from my surname. How can I edit my display name then?

Help may be coming.  I have contacted the experts in this area regarding our IPS Board.

Thanks, Jim. Just for your information, I've just tried again, with the same results.

We are currently overwhelmed with work.  The webmaster has been advised and will be working on it when it gets to the top of his queue.  I apologize for the inconvenience but we are having major problems with our IPS system that is consuming our manpower.   Our volunteers have jobs elsewhere besides their work here at AVSIM and are very busy because of the holidays.  Please be patient.

What are you trying to change?  The accent is in your name and in your signature so it is possible.  Send me a PM or tell me what new name you desire and I will try.

This is what puzzles me. Anyway, the idea is to change my display name to Luis Hernández (drop the Miguel from the name).

Accents in usernames are no longer allowed.  According to our tech, it's not a rule that we can change as it is hard-coded into IPB3 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invision_Power_Board.  Evidently, IPB2 allowed accents and this is why your username still has the accent.  When Tom (the late owner of AVSIM) upgraded to IPB3, new registrations and username updates did not allow this character.  We are currently trying to update to IPB4 and our tech stated the accent character will be allowed in this new version.  Why IPB did not include it in IPB3 is unknown.  Recommend you keep your username as is or change it and wait for the update to IPB4.

Thanks, Jim. However, I don't want to change to what I can and then, if changes are implemented, wait half a year until I can change it again to what I actually want. That's the only doubt I have remaining.

Yes, not even I know if and when the system will get upgraded to 4.0.  Upgrading a massive site like ours is not for the timid as previous attempts have been unsuccessful.  We just have to continue to try.  It may never happen.

Found it. However, since I resigned to have my name the closest to what I wanted to, looks like I have to wait to the 180-day period to finish. I thought I had changed it earlier. Do you know if there's a way to check when can I make this change?

I just tried to change it for you and our new upgrade also does not allow the symbol.
