I noticed the other day there are some Oculas Rift options in the advanced buttons section of XPlane, but not sure if VR works or is planned for later versions?

I believe the reason we haven't seen Oculus Rift support yet in X-Plane is because it doesn't work on Mac OS X or Linux, and since X-Plane is cross-platform, they've not continued to develop it. I did see X-Plane working with oculus rift at an Aerosoft conference 2 years ago, but that was for DP1. DP2 broke compatibility.

One of the biggest problems I see about VR is the fact that it needs a beasty and expensive machine to run, putting it out of reach of a lot of people. Until they can resolve this problem, I don't think it's ever going to go mainstream, which is a pity, as it has such huge potential.

Well Occulus basically abandoned opengl, so it is stuck developement atm.

Biggest problem is simply the fps needed.  For a smooth experience you need something around 80fps, which is bascially 160fps because each eye is calculated individually (or 80fps with gigantic resolution so it can be split). Imagine the last time you had that sort of FPS in any flight simulator.  The sad truth is that all flight sims, while capable to produce some form of 3D with modifications, are pretty much incapable of producing the current very convincing results you see from latest gen 3D engines.

So until we get a new version of a flightsim designed for 3D to be implemented we wont see any of that appart from some small tests to prove it's possible.

DCS has made VR a priority for upcoming versions of DCS World.Users have had very positive results running The DK2 and latest beta's of DCS World 2.0 and EDGE Graphics engine.I think VR will be the future of our hobby.
