GMAX - Can't Install - Copy Already Exists

Recommended Posts

I... am... so...  irritated right now I think my head might explode.

So... I am ready to start doing ground poly work using GMAX 1.2 only the GMAX installer will not install.   When I run it it informs me that the product already exists on my computer.   I did try to play with it almost 2 years ago but I uninstalled it.

Needless to say, I am now ready to get serious with it and now I get this stupid error.   It tells me I should uninstall with the Control Panel prior to trying to install again.    Well... GMAX is not on my uninstall list.   There are no folders left over of it.   I even purged all traces of Autodesk and GMAX from my windows Registry and rebooted and tried again and it still thinks I have GMAX installed already.   There must be a hidden key or something in the registry that's making the installer cancel out.    It has to be the 2nd most irritating thing I've ever encountered while working with scenery or just flying the simulator.

The world of Google has failed me.  Apparently I am the only person in the history of the Earth that has encountered this problem.    Any suggestions apart from a complete total system wipe and reinstall of Windows?    Does GMAX not like Win 10 with ANniversary patch installed?    What could it be?  Where have I not looked?  What stone have I not turned over?

I would use Blender instead only none of the really good tutorials on doing ground polys are for Blender.   Austin Sass is the only one that comes close but he just assumes you are already a scenery super guru and skips over the basics to get your photoreal alignment scenery down and get it all coordinated out.    The really good tutorials, both video and written are for GMAX so that is what I wanted to get into.  GMAX seems far less complicated than Blender too.

UGH!   Two days now I have messed with this install issue.... help!

Try the Microsoft uninstall fixit tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588

If that fails then this tool might be worth a try (free version or 30-day trial): http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

By the way in case you didn't run into it yet, there are problems using the gmax material navigator on win10 with the FSX gamepack loaded. If you're doing ground poly you can use the FS2004 gamepack which seems to work fine, otherwise if you need FSX gamepack I posted a (rather painful) workaround here: http://fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/gmax-material-navigator-not-available-after-windows-10-upgrade.438506/#post-756464

Thanks for the attempted assist Barry but neither tool detected GMAX, Autodesk or anything related to Turbosquid on my system.    The Install repair tool did not help.  The uninstall repair tool requires the product ID key from the registry which I don't have.   Revo Uninstaller doesn't detect anything GMAX related either.    What does GMAX look like in the Uninstaller?   What is it labelled as?     This is my curse.. I dared to want to learn something so obstacles once again get in my way... STUPID obstacles that normal people don't encounter...

Here's mine in Win7:

What do you see if you type echo %gmaxloc% into a command window? Is gmax installed at the echoed path or does the command window even echo a path? If it does, is gmax there and does it work?

GMAX is no where to be found.   You have given me one little piece of info though.   It's labelled as Discreet in your window.  I have been looking for Autodesk and GMAX in my registry.  Let me see if Discreet is in there anywhere.

EDIT:  Nope.  Still can't find it..... *sigh*  This is ridiculous....
