UAL 744 called in to get extra pax from SFO to LAX

Recommended Posts

You thought right :)

Funny enough that I just landed at SFO ... coming from Narita. Just like the 747 they sent a week ago. Tempting ...

It happens sometimes. My old airline sometimes put a 744 on a short domestic run to help alleviate holiday rushes. Also, if they were getting low on fuel after a long flight over the Pacific, they would do a "technical stop" at an airport, quickly refuel and carry on to the destination (1 hour away). Sometimes winds are not always totally predictable. In the old days (probably when fuel was cheaper), we used to do 1 hour flights as part of routine schedules.

I happened to stumble upon this UAL 937 flight when it was airborne.  I've flown it several times now lol.  There are also several LAX to SFO flights I see routine.

China Airlines 5107, Asiana 286, Nippon Cargo 109, Atlas Air 9528 to name a few.  I've been collecting some short routes lately.

Cargolux 775 (LAX to SEA), China Airlines 5171 (LAX to SEA), Cargolux 775 (DFW to IAH), EVA Air 697 (DFW to SFO).

I was quite surprised to see such a lot of 747 activity up and down the west coast. But looking at the sheer size of these cities/areas it's not surprising. Cargo doesn't need high frequencies and sending a big freighter rather than many smaller ones may be cheaper and reduces airport congestion.
